Wilber vs. How Bad vs. Is It Really?

I posted this morning about the name Wilber for my son. And didn’t get a lot of positive feedback. So I wanted to post again with a different crowd possibly. I realize it is pretty vintage and the pig in Charlotte’s Webb is called Wilbur. But how bad is it really? I had one comment that said "Horrible name. Please do not do this to your son." Is this name really that bad? I absolutely love it. And I don’t think they even teach kids about the Charlotte’s Webb book anymore so I don’t think kids his age will make the connection to the pig. But with so many people saying it’s a bad name I’m torn. I don’t want my son to hate me and that’s basically what everyone is acting like will happen if I name him Wilber. I was thinking his full name would be either Wilber Elliot or Wilber Clayton. I can’t use either one Elliot or Clayton as first names and I really want Wilber as his first name if I use it. And I don’t like Wilmer or Wilfred. Wilberforce interests me but I think it may be a little over the top. Please help me. ~Jenna

Repeating my comments from earlier this morning: make it Wilbur and I’m all in. I love vintage names and the nn Wilbie / Wilby is adorable. But I dislike the Wilber spelling. :0)

I’m not super keen on the Wilbur spelling honestly, especially since it’s the spelling from the pig in Charlotte’s Webb. But I guess I can keep it in mind. Thanks. ~Jenna

Wilbur is nice. It’s old fashioned but nice and different
Will and Willy are cute nicknames

Even without the Charlotte Webb association I still think it’s unusable - sorry! It’s just very outdated, if I heard someone shouting after their son "Wilbur" I’d do a double take, and not in a good way. How about Alfred? Good luck!

Elliott Wilbur is stunning though. Just a thought
Wilber isn’t horrible it’s just different and there’s also a lot of younger girls on here under 20.

Scratch Wilberforce much worse than being called just Wilber IMO. I didn’t see your poll earlier, Wilber is fine. If he is embarrassed he can go by Will, Willy/Willie or his middle name. Yes I think of Charlotte’s Webb at 26 but it’s not the end world! We love the name Olivia and Inthink of the darn Olivia books with the pig names Olivia. Will I not use Olivia because of that? No, that’s silly! Bottom line is that he is your baby! Have you asked those close to you their thoughts on the name? Your partner? Parents? They may have good advice if you feel you can talk to them about it. GL dear!

I have a puppy named Alfie so Alfred is not really an option.. Thanks though. ~Jenna

One of the first books you read in school, at least where I live, is Charlotte’s Web. Not a fan of Wilber. It is very old man sounding and in my opinion not a good way. There are better vintage names or "will" names out there if you are going form Will as a nickname.

^^^p.s. My brothers girlfriend is vegan and loves pigs! So you know? Maybe you do too!

Alfred and Wilbur are in the same category;)...

Also, to answer the 7th comment, I’m kinda on my own in this. I don’t really get along with my family much anymore, I only go around them at family get togethers and that is only because of my grandmother. And my fiance left the picture 2 months ago. I haven’t tole my grandmother about my name choice yet though. I’m afraid she will have the same reaction to as 90% of the other people I’ve told did, which was extremely negative. Thanks. ~Jenna

Elliot Wilber is nice. If you want to use Wilber so much I’d use it as a middle.

Are there any other names you like? Maybe we could suggest more?

I don’t think of the book. I’m 36. I think it’s nice and you never know if your child will like their name when they’re older
Will is nice as a nickname if he doesn’t like it

If I heard someone call Wilber on a playground, I would think grandfather not child. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing just my first impression. It isn’t really my style. And I agree if you are using it to get "Will" there are better options.

I am also NOT planning to use a nickname unless he chooses to later. I did not choose the name Wilber because of the nickname Will. I don’t personally care for nicknames. ~Jenna

Not a fan especially if you aren’t using a nickname.

Miriam is being used on girls again these days, it is just as "outdated" as Wilbur. But no one makes a stink about Miriam. And what about Eugene and Margaret? Again, just as "dated" as Wilbur. I think the name is nice, very refreshing to see a name that vintage among all of the Jaxons and Maddoxs. Use what you love sweetie, he’s your child. No one can tell you that he will hate you just because of his name. I’ve never liked mine at all but that never made me hate my parents.

If you LOVE the name so much just name him Wilber. It really just comes down to what you want to name your child not what a bunch of strangers on the internet think or in the world for that matter. You likely will just keep getting the same response on here so I wouldn’t waste tim posting anymore polls on this subject, just name him Wilber.

I don’t think any boy from this century is going to like having a dorky sounding name like Wilber. Very unattractive. Just makes me think of a buck-toothed, squeaky-voiced, freckle-faced, scrawny, glasses-wearing loser.

I know a 6 year old boy named Eustace who loves his name. I doubt Wilber/Wilbur would be any different. You can’t say a kid won’t like there name, you could name him William instead and he could completely hate it.

There’s a difference between vintage and outdated. She asked for opinions and that’s what people are giving! You can’t just say "it doesn’t matter what strangers on the internet think" because these opinions more or less reflect what people you meet will think about the name. Use it if you really want but I would listen to the majority!

I just don’t like the sound of it, which is really a personally opinion. I just don’t think is very attractive sounding.

Honestly, Wilbur makes me think of the Wright brothers before Charlotte’s Web. I never read Charlotte’s Web in school and I don’t know if a lot of kids do. I do think you should spell it normally. It might bring it closer to the pig but it doesn’t change how you say it, so why does that matter?
Here’s how I see things. If kids are going to have an issue with the pig, they’re also going to have an issue with the older brother named Avery, who will likely share his name with a girl in the class as well (or a girl someone knows). Not to mention that Charlotte is pretty popular as well and she would share her name with a spider. Yet, no one is cautioning people about the names Charlotte and Avery. Sure, they’re more common and have more namesakes, but Wilbur also has Wilbur Wright who is pretty cool. If you love it, go for it.

I personally find it extremely unattractive. The "ber" ending just isn’t appealing to my ear. It’s your child, but Wilber is definitely the type of name that I can see leading to teasing. It’s quite dated, unusual and commonly associated with the name of a fictional pig.

My first thought goes to the character from the Disney movie "Meet The Robinsons" then I think of Charlotte’s Webb but that’s not a bad thing. Sure it’s a little outdated but so what. Margaret, Miriam, Florence, Harriett and Genevieve have all come back into style for girls.

To the last poster, my point wasn’t to offend the OP or the posters on here that commented. I was just trying to say that I don’t see the point in making more than one poll expecting to get different results on a name if you really LOVE a name and want to use it really badly. If I really loved a name I would just go with it no matter what anyone said, that’s all I was saying.
posted by guest :: 7 years ago | report
I think it’s fine! Not a name I would necessarily choose myself, but certainly very usable!
posted by guest :: 7 years ago | report
Same thought. Horrible name.

That is true! Wilbur Robinson wears the name extremely well. I think you should use it.

USE the name, already. Stop fishing for the responses you WANT. It’s your child, if he hates his name he can always change, or go by Wil.
posted by guest :: 7 years ago | report
I do like vintage names but not so much this one. There must be other names you like. It may well grow on him and really you could wait till he’s born and see it suits him. Either the name will hold him back or he will make it cool depending on his personality, which is affected by his name.
posted by guest :: 7 years ago | report
I wasn’t expecting to get different results with this poll. I only got 8 comments on my other poll and I wanted more feedback, I don’t have many people to talk about it with person so I came back here. I just need to think on it some more. Thanks for all the feedback. ~Jenna

Personality is not affected by a name. If that were true every Chloe in the world would be the same. Every Margaret in the world would be the same. Every Tyler in the world would be the same. But everyone has their own personality right? Even if they have the same name. That’s because names don’t give someone their personality.

I don’t think it’s that bad. It almost sounds trendy to me, given the fact that almost every boy under that age of 5 I’ve met recently has had a name ending in -er (Carter, Parker, Jasper, Sawyer, Xander, Hunter, Tyler, Fletcher, Asher, Ryder, Tanner, Cooper, Archer, Jagger, Porter, Spencer). Frankly, I’m a little sick of the trend, but because of it, Wilber doesn’t sound dated to me.

I personally think this is one of those polls where someone deliberately puts an obvious unpopular name such as Wilber to create drama and everyone flocks to it and go to war in the comment section. What also gives you away is your high dramatized information on your life such as your "fiancĂ© left you and turmoil with your "family" all things that people wouldn’t usually tell strangers on the internet about unless it’s fake. I’ve been on this site a long time and have become very familiar with the trolls that come on here and can spot them pretty easily as can most of us that are familiar with this s site. I suggest you find another hobby because your certainly aren’t fooling me.

I don’t like it and personally wouldn’t use it. However, there are some really crazy names out there including fairly common names with quite odd spellings, and an evergrowing list of names considered unisex, Wilber isn’t that bad. I knew a little girl named Aliviyah, and a little boy named Creedence. If you like, use it. If you’re still concerned with what people may think, use it as a middle name. Good luck :)

You can assume this is fake all you want. But I can assure you it is not. I chose to do a brief explanation of my situation because the 7th comment mentioned me talking to a partner or parents about my name choice, I happen to be one of those people who are actually going through this stereotypical "fake" situation in real life. It does really happen you know. I did not post this because I find it to be a hobby, I’m pregnant. If you don’t believe it then move on please, the last thing I need is people who don’t know me in real life falsely accusing me of not being so over the internet just because of the state of my personal life. ~Jenna

Personality is affected by a persons names but their are many other influences so all Chloe’s etc won’t be the same, however there will be similarities. For example I have come across several nasty Christines but have never known a Peter that wasn’t a good person. It’s to do with numerology and what the names add up to and is linked with astrology. It’s also your label and it can be light or heavy to bear etc.
I do think this is a fake poll though, otherwise if you are determined to use a name, just use it, don’t ask what people think, and then get offended when they don’t like it.

I’m not offended by people not liking the name Wilber. You have that assumption completely wrong. The reason why I made this poll is so I could see just how many people dislike it and just how bad people think it is these days. I never said I’m determined to use it. I just really love it. That doesn’t mean I’m determined to use it otherwise I wouldn’t have come here again. ~Jenna
