Eleanor James vs. yes vs. no

Eleanor has been a favorite of mine since I was a teen. I was ecstatic when I casually mentioned it to my husband and he agreed almost immediately to use it for our daughter. However, coming up with middle names has been the tricky part. Eleanor Rose, Eleanor Marie, Eleanor Grace...everything we talked about was lovely, but nothing felt "right." A few weeks ago, while on the phone with my dad, I had a sudden urge to use his name for my child. My dad has been such an influential person in my life and my husband's, and Eleanor James would be in honor of that. I am hesitant to approach my husband with it though, as I don't want him to think I am favoring my side of the family (though I know he and my dad are close and I am probably worried for nothing.) I am also worried about criticism from family/friends about using a boy's name on a girl, even as a mn. Am I overthinking it? Does Eleanor James sound okay? Pregnancy hormones have me paranoid, y'all. Thanks for any input! -Megan

I'm really not a fan of this trend of using James on a girl. Though I completely understand that it's after your father. Do y'all think you may have more children in the future? If so, it may be best to save James for a possible future boy.

According to behindthename.come (which is very reputable) Jacqueline is a female variant of James. Eleanor Jacqueline flows nicely to me, or you could always use Jay which isn't as much of a strong classic boy name like James

I think James works. I mean it's in the middle name spot and it's for your dad. Talk to your husband about it. If not Eleanor Jamie or even Eleanor Jane?

I have a niece who is named Katie James. She is 12 now. James is for our father. But I do see some people thinking you are going with the dreams of boy names on girls.
But it's the middle name and it has family connection.
Good luck to you.

There isn't much of a line defining boys and girls names these days, girls are named James and Ryan and Wyatt etc.. there's a poll below yours and they're naming their daughter Bryce!

Eleanor James is a great name

Trend*** not dreams ^^^

I think it is fine since it is a family name. Through out history girls were given their dad's name as a middle name. It really isn't that uncommon but seems to strike a nerve on this site.

Dont worry about what others think, if you love it then thats what matters. Eleanor James is a nice name which honours your dad, go for it!

What do you think of Eleanor Jamie? It honors your dad but is her own name.

Love Eleanor. And he loves it too. You're 99% of the way there.

I'm not a fan of boy names on girls. But here it's in the middle name position and it has great meaning for you. I do prefer the suggestion above of Jacqueline (James comes from Jacob / Jacomus). Other feminine names for Jacob / James: Jacobina, Jacomina and Jamesina, which I find adorable. But they are not everyone's cup of tea. Good luck! :0)

You could always use your maiden name as the middle name.

I wouldn't use James for her middle name. Sure we all love our Dads but we don't use his name on our girls. Jacqueline is a beautiful form of James and Eleanor Jacqueline sounds lovely!!!

I hate the idea of using male names as FIRST names for girls, but middle names are fine. People have been using male names and family surnames as middle names for daughters to honor family members since at least the 1800's and likely before that. This isn't anything new...it's not my style personally, but I don't see anything wrong with it. Besides, middle names are more personal anyway...most people don't know your middle name; it's more of a family thing.

I think it's okay because it's a middle name and a family name. I don't like James as a first name on girls, but you can get away with a lot more when it comes to middle names.

How about Eleanor Jami or Jemma
