Brady vs. Colin vs. Ramon

I have two regular Irish names, but I really like this one Spanish name I found. It sounds so majestic and handsome! But will I get smacked for this stupid "cultural appropriation" junk people keep talking about? Thanks.

The name is Spanish, not Latin American. WASPs commonly use French and Italian names for their kids, do why not names from Spain (another "white" European country)? My personal preference is for Colin, but if you love Ramon, i don't see why you shouldn't use it.

Well, I happen to be a "WASP" as you say, and doesn't this "cultural appropriation" stuff have to do with culture rather than race?

ETA: However, i think the way you write about "stupid 'cultural appropriation' junk" is disrespectful and disturbing. And it does bother me when white people steal--er, "borrow"--parts of non-white cultures because they seem "exotic." Don't name your lily-white kid Akilah or Sachiko.

Culture vs. race--well, your family is Irish, right? Irish names are super trendy in America, and not just for Irish Americans. But because Irish folks aren't a disadvantaged group in America,* using Irish names for non-Irish children is seen as simply tapping into a part of the dominant culture.

* Anymore. A hundred years ago, it was a different story.

How is it stealing if you like and respect the culture, and you just enjoy a certain name or dress style or something? I just don't think "cultural appropriation" is real. I didn't mean to be disrespectful. I just think as long as you don't make fun of a culture, you're not doing anything wrong.

If you like a name, use it. As long as you're a decent person who is respectful of all origins it shouldn't matter what origin the name is.

I wanted to name my son Enrique and I'm white but people said not to. I wish I would've been brave enough.

You don't mean to be disrespectful, but you label a concept that you're too dense to understand as "junk" ?

I pity your kids for the kind of values that you'll pass on to them

I'm not to "dense" to understand it. The premise of the whole idea just sounds like it couldn't exist. To me, there is no such thing as "cultural appropriation", and it's just another way people make others get triggered over nothing. It's like making people be segregated.

And your very inability to grasp why affected people may be "triggered"
as you put it, is what makes you dense

Try to understand that the perspective of people whose culture, behaviour, mannerisms and names make them uncool or unwilling to assimilate when used by themselves, but are some how cool or edgy when used by other cultures who don't face such discrimination

But that's the part I don't understand. Who ever said that being true to your own culture isn't "cool" and okay? The evil is with the people making fun of a person that is part of a culture

The word "appropriation" implies that your stealing something. And liking another culture, and wanting to be like it, or a part of the people in it isn't mocking them. Try to see past liberalism.

What I'm saying is, the problem you're talking about isn't really "cultural appropriation", it's prejudice against a certain culture.

People who are already part of a culture, and people who like parts of a culture, and want to enjoy it by dressing in it or making food from it, or using names from it aren't saying true people of the culture are "weird" or "uncool".

I would never mock another culture, I'm sorry about my strong language. I'm just a bit tired of people thinking they "own" certain styles and names and such.

Or rather, not the people of the culture thinking they own them. But "advocates" saying that the original cultures "own" them.

If you really wanted to respect someone's culture, you wouldn't dismiss appropriation of it as being "junk" or "not real" regardless of whether or not you perceive yourself to be someone who disrespects that culture.

You can't simultaneously say that you respect a culture, and then in the same breath say that it's ok to turn a blind eye to those that don't.

If you're tired of people from a certain ethnicity of culture thinking they own a name that they actually did come up with and actually forms a part of their culture, imagine how tired they are of people like you

For what it's worth, I do actually like Ramon best out of this name set, but you lost all sympathy when you used this forum as a way to rant about how it hurts your feelings that some people might not be ok with that

I'm not saying "turn a blind eye to people who disrespect the culture". My point was only that liking and using names, food, clothes and things like that from a different culture is not disrespecting a culture.

I think that anyone who disrespects someone's culture should be called out for it and addressed. Always.

If you were paying attention, you would have seen that I corrected myself and said that I meant that it was "advocates" that say "you can't use something from a different culture".

I think it's perfectly fine and beautiful if a person identifies with their own culture. That's part of what makes them who they are.

When I said "I'm sorry about my strong language". I meant specifically saying "stupid 'cultural appropriation' junk." Again, I'm sorry I didn't say that more politely.

I just really like the name Ramon, I didn't want anyone to tell me it was bad for me to use it.
