Johanna vs. Yohanna

Johanna is an honorific name pronounced yo-HAH-na (like Hana NOT Hannah) by my Norwegian great-grandmother. I'm fairly set on the name, but my sister suggested changing the spelling so it's pronounceable to English speakers. I have an oddly pronounced name (Martha, pronounced Marta), so I understand how annoying it is to correctly people CONSTANTLY. But I really don't like the Y spelling or the hard J pronunciation. Thoughts?

Spell it Johanna and just correct people. I've heard that pronunciation before, I'm sure many others have too, so it will be annoying but fine.

One of my old classmates was Johanna pronounced Yo-hah-na and noone ever had problems saying it. She may have to correct a few people here or there but most people will get it. Johann isn't that uncommon so Johanna should be easy. It's the 21st century, most people are more worldly educated, and if they aren't they should be lol.

Johanna gmv. Literacy is on the line.

OK. That's ridiculous. But I really don't like phonetic spellings unless the original is really out there, as with some Gaelic names. Lots of names need correcting. Think of all the Helenas out there. ("No, it's HELEN-uh / heh-LAY-nuh / heh-LEE-nuh.") Honoring your great grandmother and heritage is worth it. Good luck! :0)

Johanna does look prettier to me. I don't think it's a big deal to correct people. Lots of European names have the Y sound for J so it's probably not the first time folks have encountered that possibility. You can always refer people to Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms and Johann Strauss Jr. (famous classical composers) all of whose names contain the Y sound and are always written with a J.

I didn't vote. I am from the US but have worked with people from Canada and South Africa that naturally pronounce Johanna with the Y sound.
