I prefer Kaia for a girl and I prefer Kai for a boy. But if I had to choose a spelling, I would definitely pick Kai for either gender. Khai looks odd and made up in my opinion.

If I saw Kai on paper I would definitely assume boy so I voted for Khai.Maybe a unique spelling would give me pause and consider that it might be for a girl.

Kai is one of the rare actual neutral names, it is spelled Kai, anything ekse just looks silly.
