Rio vs. River
Little bit of a dilemma here. I love the name River and have since before I met my fiancé and always wanted that to be my sons name( and he's completely on board). The problem(?) is my fiancés best friend has a son named River as well. His River is going to be a few years older but I'm still not 100% sure we should use it for that reason. I've seen Rio around and it means "River", would that be a good alternative or should we stick with River?

Honestly I'd stick with River. If it was his nephews name I'd avoid it but since it's not I would use it since it's a name you've pictured on your (at the time) future son. My brothers name is Ryan and my moms best friend named her son Ryan a couple years earlier and it's never been a problem.

Rio gmv.
Rio can of course stand on its own. But I'd prefer it as a nn for something like Riordan ("REER-dun"). It means poet king in Gaelic. Other ideas: Orion, Mario, Dario, Adriano, Horatio, Jericho, or even Harrison (R, I, and O appear in order). Good luck! :0)

I dislike both ideas.River is a word that should stay a word. Would you consider lond? Just because a celebrity liked it doesn't mean we should continue using it. I bet there were no children named River 40 years ago. Find a new name. There are thousands out there. There most be others you can love also.

I strongly dislike the name River. In 20 years everyone will be able to guess which decade they were born in since it's becoming so popular now. I like Rio. Also, it's more unique! I've never met a Rio! However, I've met two boy River's and a coworker is expecting a girl she wants to name "Riverley" so it's getting bland to me anyway. Rio gmv
