^^I agree that Hoss only makes me think of Bonanza. I don't think I have ever heard of it otherwise.
Are you open to using a full name and calling he/she Voss? If so Vosem (not sure if I spelled this correctly) is a fairly common Russian name where I currently live.
For a girl you could try Vosena and then I also know Vassa is a Russian name here as well. Maybe Voseph, Voser, etc...
