Nikolai looks right for the full name but Nico looks right for the nickname.
I feel like you could still do it that way.There must be tons of names where that's the case for example Jacob with a C becomes Jake with a K when you use the nickname.

Nikolai is Slavic. Nicolai is Norwegian / Danish. So if either applies to the child I'd let that settle the debate. If not, then Nikolai is the more common spelling and will be the easiest. Good luck! :0)
