Ronald Mitchell vs. Drake Mitchell vs. Shane Mitchell
Name change issue: My ten year old son, currently Ronald, hates his name that was not my choice to give him, but his biological dad that has not been his father since giving up his rights while Ronald Jr was a toddler. Now my son is officially being adopted by my husband of three years and is over the moon at getting a new last name (Ross is the new surname after adoption) to match his new baby brother's and who he considers his 'real' dad, and is begging to change his first name. Of the names he likes ... Well Drake or Shane are the only ones I find not terrible ... he's keeping Mitchell in the middle because he says he doesn't mind it so much.
The Top Baby Name is...

I think Shane is the better choice.
I do think he should try it out for a few weeks, maybe try out a few other names (eg. Ronan on Ryan or Allan or Alden…trying to think of names that aren't too far off Ronald, but sufficiently different).

Shane I'd nice but it's a bit S heavy. I like Drake more.

Thanks everyone, we've decided he's going to 'try' Shane before deciding, although I think he's already determined that it's going to be permanent!

Since the surname is one syllable, you might want to find a name that has more than one syllable, Shane Ross, and Drake Ross sound kind of abrupt.

Every thing he's picked so far has been one syllable. He's at an age where he has ideas of what he likes and cares very much he's taken seriously. I'm just trying to veto things that are terrible and won't age well, not force him to pick what I like. After finding out he's been refusing to be called Ronald at school for two years now and has been almost exclusively using the nickname Toast since he was 7 ... I don't think Shane is bad at all really, just will be so different!
