The nickname Coco vs. Yes vs. No
We are due a baby girl and I've always loved the name Dakota for either girl or boy. I also love the name Coco but I don't think I can use it as a legal first name for a child. I know that some people do have children called coco but I just wanted our baby to have coco as a nickname. I did think of other options such as Colette, Cody, Cosette and we already have a baby Chloe in the family. The only other name I considered was Carlotta but my partner doesn't approve and prefers Dakota much better, any thoughts or opinions or suggestions for a full name for baby "Coco". Thankyou!

Just to clarify, we would be using Dakota as her first name with the nickname "coco" but I'm not sure if it's too much of a stretch!

I prefer Colette or Cosette, maybe Charlotte or Nicolette.
Dakota is past its prime. I know girls are named it but it is not girly. Pick something fresher than dusty Dakota.

Coco is a fine nickname but it is not appropriate to name your child after a Sioux word. It's like naming a child Pocahontas. Using Native names for non-native people is considered cultural appropriation, and offensive to many.

Coco is adorable as a nn. It's a shame he didn't like Carlotta, such a beautiful name.
Other possible full names:
Jacomina / Giacomina -- fem. of Jacob (and therefore James)
Cordelia
Coral / Coralie
Consuelo*
Scholastica -- educated
Corinne
Constance / Constanza
Corisande
Socorro -- succor, aid, relief
Calliope*
Colleen
Nicole / Nicola / Nicolette -- any Nicholases to honor?
Kimiko
Jocosa -- happy
Cora
Cosima -- ("KO-see-muh" or "KAHZ-i-muh")
Coco Chanel's real name was Gabrielle. So (as with all nns in my book) Coco needn't be based on a name with a "ko" sound*. Good luck! :0)
* These suggestions take more imagination, but still doable.

Nicole nn Coco makes a lot of sense to me. Of course, that's a very different style than Dakota or Carlotta so that may not be your taste. If you name her Dakota will you still spell her nickname Coco or would you be more likely to spell it Koko?
