Michael John vs. John Michael
Name dilemma. My late father in laws name is John and my husband would like to use his name for our son. He has a nephew Jonathan but everyone in the family calls him John. So I came up with Michael John nickname MJ. John Michael flows better but I'm concerned that we already have a John in the family. I can't think of any other nickname beside Johnny but I'm not a fan of that nickname. Any suggestions? Opinions? Is it an issue that there are two johns? Should we call him by his middle name and use John as a formal government name? Please help

Johann,Shane,Sean Yahn and Janni are variants of John. There are many others. Does that interest you. Double name John Micah a little shorter and current than Michael.

I'm not opposed to a double first name. But would it be weird to add a middle name to it?

I'd probably not add another name, personally. Just John Michael and call him by both. I love double names when the flow is right. This sounds really good to me.

John Michael flows better. But John is soooooo incredibly dated. It's like naming a little girl Linda or Susan. They aren't bad names, but they sound like the name of someone 60+ years old. Also John Michael is a famous dude.

John isn't like Linda or Susan. John is like Mary or Elizabeth - not particular to any exact generation, but completely classic and timeless.
I like John, but it sounds like there are a lot of them. I'd use it as a middle name or with an initial nickname - John David, JD, for example.

What I don't care for about John is guys saying they are going to the John.
What if your John isn't like his grandfather John.? Sometimes it is better to put the name in the middle spot so, he does have the burden of living up to a deceased relative.

I agree. I don't recommend family names as first names. In my case there are two names I almost used that I'm glad I didn't

Michael is boring and overused. What about Micah ? John is better as a middle .

Michael John or Micah John are both fine. Not exciting at all but if you use John Michael you better have a super unique last name because that's probably the most common combo order in the world for two of the most common names in the last century.

You could call him John Michael whenever he's around your nephew, if clarification is needed. It's ok to name him John Michael.
