Helen vs. Helena
Which one do you like better? My husband is concerned that Helen is too old-fashioned, but I'm afraid Helena will be mispronounced. I know it's literally just an a on the end of Helen, but I've heard a few people mispronounce it and I'm not sure I want to have her have to correct people her whole life. Thanks for your comments.

I vote Helena. I agree that Helen is a bit dated. But you're right, some people will pronounce it differently. In French, it is eh-leh-NAH, for example. But I also don't think that it'll be too common. I think most people say it like Helen-a in the USA and with the stress on the 2nd syllable in Europe because that's how it's said in most languages.

I think Helen is a bit plain, but I love Helena! Classic, sort of European sounding, very feminine!

I love Helena. It's classic, feminine and regal. A beautiful choice, imo.
There are 3 correct pronunciations for Helena. I know a Hel-en-uh and a Ha-lee-nuh, both spelled Helena.
Personally I prefer the simplicity and beauty of Helen. It seems much easier for the person wearing it. As for being old fashioned, look at any preschool class and you'll find kids named Penelope, Hazel, Stella, Lillian, Miles, Silas, Theodore, etc. Old fashioned is very on trend.

Helena is beautiful. I wouldn't say the "heh-LEE-nuh" or "heh-LAY-nuh" pronunciations were mispronunciations though. Helena just has many legitimate (for lack of a better term) ways to say it. Your way, "Helen + uh" is my favorite too. Good luck! :0)
