Yes to Avery vs. No to Avery
Hey! We are considering the name Avery for our daughter and would love to hear your thoughts on it. I know it is gender-neutral but I think it's one of the few names that genuinely works for a boy or girl (please call me out if I'm wrong!). My main concerns are that it is extremely close to "ovary" and I don't want the nickname "Ava" to be used. Anyway, any opinions/feedback help and are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Gender neutral names are one of my least favourite styles but Avery is one of the few I can tolerate.
^I agree. If you're comfortable with its popularity (#29 in 2023 for girls), then I say go for it.
I know an Avery, 10. She is never called Ava. No reference to ovary.

I think it's cute and works for a girl or boy. I don't think it would be assumed that her nn is Ava and I never thought of it sounding like ovary.

Seriously, calling it a 'neutral' name is just self delusion, it is a bnog, but it is in reality strictly masculine, a transtation of the name Alfred, itself derived from the Germanic Alberich. None of this is feminine or even neutral. Ava though is feminine. The only Averys I know are male and would always assume the name refers to a boy.

Avery is fine for a girl. You could also spell it Averie (which might also make it look less like ovary, though I would never have thought of that reference myself). I went to school with a girl Averill, pronounced with a long A just like Avery. (AY-ver-il) You might like that too. There's also Reverie but that's pretty obscure. Since Ava is so popular, there's likely to already be an Ava in her class so Avery isn't too likely to get shortened to Ava I don't think.
