Giuseppe vs. Joseph

I am marrying into an Italian family and the family has a tradition of honoring the grandfather with the first name of the first son. The options are Giuseppe or Joseph. There are already quite a few Josephs in my family. He would go by Joey. I am not sure how I feel about Giuseppe, but my husband loves it.

I prefer Joseph to Giuseppe. Are there a lot of Giuseppes in the family too?

My father in law goes by both Giuseppe and Joseph. I feel like Joseph is easier to pronounce in the US. It is also much more common. I am torn because I don't love the sound in Giuseppe, but I like that it's more unique and specific to his Italian heritage.

Could you alter the tradition and use Giuseppe as the middle name? Perhaps that would solve your dilemma.

Sadly, it has to be the first name.

I'd break tradition.

I voted for Joseph b/c every Joe I've ever known has been a good guy. I think it's important that you love the name, no matter what it is.

Love Joseph nickname Joey but this is your baby. Only pick a name you love. You don't have to continue a tradition of using the same name

Since you're unsure about Giuseppe, I would choose Joseph nn Joey. It sounds like you would feel more comfortable using a name that people can pronounce.

Just curious...it's also the Italian tradition to name a first daughter after the grandmother. What name might that be?

Would names like Jonah, Jonas, Josiah or Joel fulfill the requirement? Perhaps you could satisfy everyone with a name that's more to your liking. To me tradition is worthless if you are going to be unhappy due to adherence.

If you really have to use either Giuseppe or Joseph for the first name, I think Joseph will make you happier. Perhaps the middle name could be your choice or a family name from your side. Good luck!
