Janie Quinn vs. Quinn

Hi. We've already named our daughter but she is starting preschool and I'm not sure what she should go by. Her name is Janie Quinn Carmack. We call her Janie Quinn at home but we don't want people to drop the Quinn. Would it be easier for her to go back Quinn Carmack in school. Which do you like? Janie Quinn or Quinn

Thank you. Do you like Janie Quinn even as she ages? My mom is Janie so this is where the name comes from. I love it but some people have said it would sound too juvenile for a teen or older girl. I'm also not sure if we will have people dropping Quinn and calling her Janie only either.

You're welcome! I think it will age nicely but am a firm believer that the child will be in the drivers seat of what they go by as they get older. It's nice she has options. I have friends from different periods of my life that call me different variations of my name and it's nice. Family and close friends call me Glori, most colleagues call me Gloria and my college friends call me Glo.

I think that some people might drop the Quinn, but if you tell the teachers she goes by Janie Quinn they'll try to follow that. I have a cousin whose daughter is Addie Grace and everyone calls her that. As she gets older, she can decide for herself if she wants to go by Janie Quinn or Quinn or even Janie.

Preschool is a great time to try out new options as she'll likely have different classmates in kindergarten. We sometimes call our daughter by first and middle names, sometimes first name only, sometimes middle name only. To most people she just goes by her first name. But as she started a new school this year and didn't convincingly/consistently reply which name she wanted people to use, I told her teacher to call her by both names. That way her classmates get used to hearing both names and when she decides she only wants one or the other, it won't be too off-the-wall. At least that's how we're hoping it goes. If you want her preschool teachers & classmates to call her Janie Quinn, say so. They probably will. If your daughter decides she only wants one or the other at some point, that's probably what will happen, even though you can still call her Janie Quinn at home.

It depends on what she wants. I'm not sure what Janie Quinn's personality is like, but I know that I would have thrown a fit as a child if anyone dared call me anything but Annie.
It's great that you're thoughtful enough to consider something even as small as her name, and I think she'll be really glad one day that she has lots of options.
I'd say tell her teachers to call her Janie Quinn because thats what she's used to, and when she gets older if she has a different idea she can always discuss it with you.
Tell little Janie Quinn that a random lady on the internet called Raeann wishes her luck on her first day of preschool!
