Dominic vs. name dilemma

Hey guys, I'd love to hear some opinions. I have always had a soft spot for the name Dominic, but i am not a massive fan of the name "Dom". It is livable but not my first choice of nickname. Do you think it is possible to avoid that name? I was thinking I could correct to something such as Nic or Nico as a baby and hope it sticks. Of course I cant control nicknames when he's older, but do you think its possible for a Dominic not to become Dom? Thanks!

My brother is Daniel but my mother disliked the nn Dan. At home he was always just Daniel and I never called him Dan- ever. At school, people called him Dan but he would correct them and say Daniel. As he got older, as a teenager and into his 20s, Dan became unavoidable. It was Dan this & Dan that. He stopped correcting people. My mother to this day, doesn't like it when people call him Dan. It's funny, because now I call him Dan sometimes and other family members do too. His wife even calls him Dan. Daniel eventually turned into Dan. Now, when introducing himself, he calls himself Daniel every time. He is still Daniel, through & through. This post has now made me smile and has reminded me that I have to continue to call him Daniel and not stray to Dan!

Re: Dominic. Let me put it to you straight- he will get Dom. I think when he's younger, it will be easier to control. If you say his nn is Nico, Dom will be less likely to happen. I don't think you should disregard a name you have a soft spot for just because you don't like the nn. I feel like I am being a hypocrite though, because I love the name Valentina but dislike Val. Therefore, it's not a contender if I have a girl.
Wow this turned into an unnecessary novel and not sure if I accomplished anything. Probably just confused you more.

Bottom line, Dominic is a very handsome name and Nico is a very cute nick name. Best of luck to you!!!

Dislike Dominic

I think it's possible for Dominic to stay Dominic and/or use your preferred nn. My son is Theodore with no nn and it's working out just fine. Most — if not all — will to their best to respect your wishes.

Love Dominic and yes, at least until he's older, people will follow your lead with his name / nn

It's possible for Dominic to just stay Dominic but it's unlikely, unless you teach your son to dislike Dom, because sooner or later he will get Dom from some people and if he enjoys it then that will be it. If he dislikes it, though, people will stop out of courtesy.
