I think Mac sounds better with a middle name beginning with a consonant because the "c" has a tendency to run into vowels.

I would consider giving Mac a fuller name. In my opinion, Mac D. is too close to McDonald's. The kids will have a field day with it.

Didn't catch the Mac D thing. Namehog is right. Hmmm. So even if Mac is a nn for something like Malcolm it still won't work. That's a shame because I really like Mac generally (as a nn). :0(

I don't think your last name starting with D is that big of a deal (not trying to downplay others' opinions, just giving my own). Kids are gonna tease if they want to tease no matter the name. I like Mac, either as a standalone or as a nickname for a longer form like Cormac.
