Charles vs. Nicknamed vs. Hal/Cal

We love the name Charles for our second son. He will be joining big brother Graham. We do love the name Charles but worry it sounds a bit formal. We aren't huge fans of "Charlie", but really like both Cal and Hal- do you think either of those could work as a nickname for Charles? Thank you for your thoughts!

I love Hal so much - however I don't think he's super intuitive for Charles. Cal however I think may work well!! It also goes nicely with Graham :)

Although I do love Hal, I think Cal would probably be better as a nickname for Charles.

Hal is usually a nickname for Henry and Harold.

Charles, nn Chas/Chaz or Chuck

Cal and Hal aren't nicknames for Charles.

Personally I love Charlie and would use that for sure but I understand if you're not a fan.
In that case I think Cal works better than Hal.I admit it's not the most natural nickname for Charles.I think when people hear Cal they are far more likely to assume his full name is Calvin (or Callum,Callahan, etc.) but even though it's a bit of a stretch the letters are all there so it CAN still work.

So long as you're okay with the nickname not being intuitive, I think it's fine.

Charles, nn Cal, gmv. Love it.

Cary is another possible nn for a Charles. Personally I'm good with Charles, nn Buddy or Skip. As strict as I am with full names is as lax as I am with nicknames. They are whimsical, creative and can differ among friend sets. Good wild with a nn, I say. So yeah, Charles , nn Cal or Hal, is great. Good luck! :0)

I think either would work! Nicknames don't have to be intuitive; they can be whatever you want.
