To me, the name is unisex, but I like different spellings for girls and boys. Briar for a girl, Brier for a boy. I've actually met a boy named Breyer (like the ice cream).

Spelling would affect my opinion.
Briar definitely makes me think girl.Probably because it makes me think of Briar Rose in the fairy tale but I also know someone who recently named their baby boy Breyer and with that spelling I think it works fine for a boy.
