I like them in this order:
Joy
Grace
Faith
Hope
Charity
Love

Joy and Grace are the first two because they sound the nicest and have nice meanings. Faith is a little awkward to say and Hope is way too short and abrupt. Charity only gets any sort of a vote because it can be shortened- otherwise, I think its a terrible name, despite the meaning. Love just isn’t a name. As for other virtue names, I think they’re ridiculous and no child should be tortured with such names (like Trinity, Unity, Felicity, etc).

I like Faith the best. I think it is the prettiest and I think you always have to have faith to get through life.

I love Faith!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She was a foster kid that lived with my family for almost 3 years. So I will always be biased to Faith, she was like a sister to me and will always be in my heart. On the other hand my least favorite is Joy, that was her mother. We try are hardest not to use the word in our home. No offense to anyone named Joy, just the one I don’t like.

After Faith I like Grace then Hope. Love doesn’t really seem like a name. Charity is pretty, but I also like Trinity. When I have kids, my first daughter will have the middle name Faith!

I should also add that most virtue names are very "hippie" and people who read job applications will very soon discard ones with names like Love or Destiny because they sound like people who come from uneducated families.

I totally agree. Without Faith, you can get no where in life. It’s my fav too!

Grace for sure. And Joy is really pretty when added onto other names, like Joy-Anna or Joy-Leigha.

I dont really like Love either, but I have seen it as people’s middle names alot, and thought it was used. Thanks everyone!

Yes, suggestions would be nice. Thank you.

Agreed, without Faith, you cannot get through life. I also believe that Joy is a perfect name for the bundle of Joy you are about to receive and Grace for God’s grace in blessing you with a child. Hope is pretty too, but it does sound a bit like all your hopes rely on this child. Love is a little over the top and Charity sounds a bit strange on a child.

I think these names are way overused and need to go into retirement. It seems that every other child has one of these names either as a first or middle. Time to be a bit more creative and not so cookie-cutter.

What are your names, pp? Just trying to get some ideas on what names are not overused and cooke cutter...

Congrats! Good look naming the baby/babies, Im sure you will have people downing them. (as everyone usually does) I think I will keep with a virture name, thanks anyway.

I don’t really care what other people think, I go with what I like just as you should but you did ask ..."I was thinking about using one, but I’m not sure if I should or not." So if virtue names are your thing then you should do what you want but I was just giving you an honest opinion on why I thought "not".
I really only have a problem with Grace, Faith & Joy in the overused department... I like Verity and ones that are bit uncommon. If you’re already pregnant then good luck and best wishes.

Im sorry, my hormones are going crazy right now. You are right, I did kind of ask for opinions. The way you said it just sounded very rude.

Sorry, not intended to make you mad. I admit I have a huge hang-up with a few of those names but like I said Verity, Amity and the like are really nice. Are you thinking of them as first names or middle names. (Sorry your hormones are going crazy, I can’t wait.... though once they start I won’t remember thinking this!)
posted by guest :: 15 years ago | report
Well, I was thinking first name, but alot of people are trying to talk me out of it.. (especially family) I do think Verity is pretty, hmm. I really like that.

K, I looked up some:
*Note - I know some of these aren’t the greatest, just giving you the full list.

Amity
Charity
Chastity
Emer
Esperanza
Faith
Felicity
Grace
Honor
Justice
Mercy
Modesty
Patience
Peace
Prudence
Purity
Serenity
Temperance
Truth
Verity
Virtue
Wisdom

Is there a special reason for a virtue name? I was thinking perhaps if you are looking to appease your family maybe pick a virtue name you like and find a name that means that. If you’re not worried about family then do what makes you happy, this is YOUR baby, besides, once they see her they won’t care at all what her name is, they’ll just be in love.

grace and charity are my 2 faves. charity is nice because its very uncommon
posted by guest :: 15 years ago | report
No real reason really, I just thought it would be pretty, and thought it would be a nice name to have. I know her name should be something I love, but I dont want everyone to have her name! Thanks for suggesting Verity, that is my new favorite, Hope was before.

You’re welcome. I’m sure whatever you pick will be lovely. Good luck.
posted by guest :: 15 years ago | report
By the way, why do they hate it?
posted by guest :: 15 years ago | report
Thanks. They just think that she will have alot to live up to. I guess that is true though.
posted by poll creator :: 15 years ago | report
Hmmm, wasn’t expecting that answer. My opinion is that sometimes a name is just a name and not something to live up to. I mean, my name mean "defender of mankind" and it’s never crossed my mind to somehow fulfill that. I understand that with virtue names the meanings are self-evident but if someone named their child Chastity or Purity does that mean they should live their lives like nuns? Never get married? Sometimes names are just beautiful and call to us. I think your family might be overthinking it. Sorry for being verbose!

My 3 favourite from your list in order:
Hope
Grace
Love

Joy is okay. Kind of short.
Faith is okay, but kind of plain to me.
Charity is pretty, but at the same time kind of harsh-sounding somehow.

I really love virtue names like these, but only as first names. Then it seems like you really did like the name. As middle names, they sound more like filler names. My middle name is Grace, and I always wished it was something that sounded like my parents put more thought into it.

My wife and I have used Grace, Faith, Joy, Hope and Mercy as middle names. For our latest little girl (due 3/21), we are considering Patience, Peace and Glory.

My dauhgters are Gracelyn and Joylnn i’m looking for something similar that would go with lyne

I have a virtue middle name and therefore have given both my daughters virtue middle names. I wish there were more masculine virtue names I could use and love if I ever have as boy, best so far is trust.

I love virtue names! I do love all the ones you listed, here are some more you did not list:
Amity(I really like this name!)
Patience(vary pretty and old-fashond! Just don’t like any nicknames)
Mercy/Merry(I love both and may name my child Mercy someday!)
Glory/Gloria(Pretty. I esppally like Glory because its less common.)
Felicity(I am considering naming my little girl this! I love it!)
Liberty(if my mom has a girl, this will be her name!I love it!)
Trust(I do like this name)
Hosanna(Love it!)
Rejoice(Love it!)
Don’t feel like you have to name you child a name from this list. I do love all the names you thought of too! My name is Faith, and I have a sister named Charity, so I would have to say they are my favorite from your list, but I do also love Grace, Hope, and Joy espally!
Hope I helped!
