Nate vs. Nathan vs. Nathaniel

Our son is due in September and we are still deciding on his name. We love the name Nate but we aren’t sure if it will work well as a full first name. Should we go with Nathan or Nathaniel and just call him Nate or simply name him Nate? Any middle name suggestions are welcome! Thanks, Tara and Ben Reeves.

We are pretty set against Nathaniel, but pretty positive we are going to go with Nathan.
We particularly like Nathan Joel, Nathan Cole, Nathan Samuel, and Nathan Alexander. Thanks for all of your help so far!

If you want his name to be Nate, call him Nate. There’s nothing wrong with it.

I love the name Nathaniel and I think it’s a wonderful name, but Nathan would probably be better, in my opinion, so that he wouldn’t get teased. Of course, it’s my belief that people make their names (For example, I like the name Cassandra since my friend Cassandra is a wonderful person but I hate the name Cherish since the Cherish I know is... As far from a wonderful person as she can get) but you should choose whatever feels right. :)

My son’s name is Nathaniel Laurence (Laurence after my father). It rolls beautifully off the tongue and is a sonorous and dignified name for a lovely cheeky boy. He can decide is he wants to be Nat, Nate, or Nathaniel (he’s just over 2!)

Nathaniel Josiah?
Nathaniel Ajay?
Nathaniel Orion?
Nathaniel Bryon?
Nathaniel Aiden?
Nathaniel Caleb?
Nathaniel Emmett?
Nathaniel Gavin?
Nathaniel Drake?
Nathaniel Clark?

Nathan Viggo?
Nathan Gage?
Nathan Lloyd?

^ Those are honestly some of the worst sounding names that I’ve ever heard in my life.

Nate Bill Alexander?
Nate John Alexander?

^ What? Was Nate Bill Alex or Nate John Alex just too much?

"If you want his name to be Nate, call him Nate. There’s nothing wrong with it."

Yes. There is. Nothing screams that a child’s parent was some uneducated hick, as when the child’s given name is a nickname.

Hi. My 5 year old son is called Nate and I would be interested to know of any other Nates in our country ? It seems to be an American name only .

Awwww! How cute! We love the name Nate too and named our baby Nathan (in 2002). He goes by both names and the really sweet thing....our last name is Reeves also! 😍

Nate is an awesome name. Personally, I like names where the name is the name... no shortening. My name is Kimberly; I go by Kimberly yet no matter how I introduce myself, people still call me Kim. It makes me crazy. We love the name Nate and felt if that’s the name we love, why not just use it as the full first name vs having Nathan, Nathaniel, etc. So, Nate Joseph it was/is!
