I agree, Valkyrie should not be used as a name for a little girl. Maybe Valerie or Kyri/Kyria?

I’m sorry but I have to agree with the others, everyone is just going to think of the Hitler movie. I like the suggestion of Valerie though, or maybe Valentina?

Valkyrie is a Scandinavian girls name. My husband, Anton, is of Jewish and Scandinavian decent. We love the name. So we’re keeping it. We did not ask if you liked it or not, we just asked for middle name suggestions.

BTW its a wonderful name. The movie was crap and no one will remember it. I have yet to run into someone who has talked about the movie. Most people ask where we got it from, others know of it from the mythology. Its beautiful and it fits our strong little girl. Ignore everyone else. They can stick with Brianna, Sarah, Jennifer and various form of Jayden.

My daughter\’s name is Valkyrie Faye. I had that name picked out for years; before the movie came out. Fortunately, most people don\’t know of the movie. Unfortunetly, there are the occasional morons, like the above poster, who think the name was made up for a movie. Valkyrie is a strong, beautiful name. I\’m glad to know there are other mothers out there who feel the same way! :)

it’s a Norse mythical race born of Gods Freya and Odin. A fey peoples often found in a lot of fantasy romance fiction these days. See Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series for a great example. Nothing to do with the Tom Cruise movie in this instance, I believe. My own name is Norse and it’s Heidrun

Valkyrie is a great name, which I will as well name my daughter when the time comes. Alternative maybe Valkyria.
The name certainly not come after a movie. Valkyrie is a strong name which reflects courage. The origin of the name comes from the Norse mythology, as the Valkyrie was a Odins’ "Warrior Angel". There were 3 Valkyries at total.
The direct translation would be "the chooser of the slain", for she gathered those souls who had fell in the battlefield.
Valkyrie is also name of a motorcycle model.
I hope you chose a good mid name for your girl :) Elanor is really beautiful which someone suggested before in the comments.
If you wish to go with the myth, names could have been Lenneth, Lenne. (Maybe even Alicia, though its roots does not come from the actual myth)
For my daughter I was thinking about Toivo (which means hope at English). Something that reflects how precious and important she will be to me..

It is a beautiful name, but people don’t know or think about it’s origins. Also, unfortunately, it was the middle name of one of the Mittfords, and she was an ardent supporter of Hitler.

The name is lovely...rare (although you wouldn’t think so after reading this thread), and strong sounding. I would pair it with a softer name such as:
Elise
or...another couple of names that I really love that is of Hebrew origin is Hadassah (meaning myrtle tree)...or Tzipporah(meaning bird)
additional Hebrew names that may go well are:
Aliza
Sarai
Good luck, and I love the name!

I love Valkyrie and named my daughter that in 1992 LONG before that dumb movie. Norse mythology is much older than WWII! Her middle name is Irene after my mom’s middle name, and her initials spell VIM , like vim and vigor! lol!! we kept the ’tradition’ of having middle initials spell something. 2nd daughter is AIM - like for the stars! Just a little thing to bolster their confidence, tho Valkyrie was born with lots of that, so her name fits her perfectly!!

I think Valkyrie is an excellent name for a girl, particularly in the world in which she is going to grow up... it is the name of the ancient Norse God Odin’s female warriors who not only battled against Odin’s enemies, but also chose which of the male soldiers and warriors would enter Valhalla once they died on the battle field, and even who would be slain and who wouldn’t.
It is possible the modern name Valerie stems from the name Valkyrie, because the meaning of Valerie is ’Brave’ which the Valkyrie were considered of the highest order.
I don’t think most people understood the title of that movie everyone is referring to... the tile wasn’t referring to the character Brad pit played, it was referring to the character the lead girl played, who was a brave and conscientious person who abhorred Hitler and his
generals.
What about something like ’Valkyrie Raziel’. Raziel is the name of the archangel who guards the secrets of the universe, the angel of mysteries... you could spell it Razel or Rarzel, just so people will pronounce it properly.
Or, Valkyrie Angelica... which of course also means Angel, so combined your daughter would be A Warrior Angel.
Of course it depends what your surname/last name is, because it also needs to work with that.
I realize this is a long time coming, but I just want all those people who thought i a negative name to re-think, and maybe just do a little research before jumping the gun.
Cheers

My name is Valkyrie, and though it does get confused with Valerie a lot I manage it by just either spelling it out for people or having them call me Val if they truly can't get it. My middle name is Morgan, and I feel as though that's fairly balanced. "Valkyrie Morgan" really rolls off the tongue, at least for me. And as for it being the name of a death goddess, I think that's pretty killer and empowering. People thought it was a really pretty name when I was a little girl, not too harsh.

I love the name Valkyrie! Don't let other people's unwanted opinions change your mind! Some people apparently feel like it's their right to spew ugly opinions all over the place. Did anyone ask if they liked it? Umm, no.

Valkyrie is a great name, I've been fortunate to carry this beautiful name for 29 years. Mine is Valkyrie Melinda, not the best but it flows well. The most annoying thing is trying to explain the origin of this name to idiots.
