What do you think of the name Ellis? vs. Strong & masculine? vs. Too girly?

Hi all! I love the name Ellis for a little boy, but I’m not sure if it is manly enough. To me it seems a bit on the girly side because of the "Ell" sound. What do you think? I was considering using the name Ellis James or Ellis Alexander. Thanks for your input!

RIGHT NOW it is too girly since unisex and just plain boy names are trendy right now. I’ve heard Ellis for a girl several times on this site. What about Elliott or Elias?

I babysit a little boy named Ellis, and he is nothing girly! The name fits him very well.

Ellis, is a masculine name! Its also a great name!

I love both your mn suggestions. Possibly Ellis James slight more than Alexander..

Ellis Reuben
Ellis Jackson
Ellis Isaac

GL! Keep the name though, don’t be tempted to change it!

I think Ellis is a great name for a boy and I do not like it at all for a girl. Elliot is no more masculine and is also being used for girls. I think Ellis is a great, masculine name and I hope you stick with it! James and Alexander both sounds good with it. GL!

I think it sounds really nice. If you were worried you could always use Elliott.

Thank you for your comments. I am actually very surprised to see that there is only one person who thinks that it is not a masculine name... although the final results of the poll remain to be seen. Ok for part 2 of my poll, what do you think of the name with my other son’s name, Tate? Do they go together?

I’m not a huge fan of Ellis because I did know one Ellis growing up... Teachers always expected a girl and that always got a few laughs and jokes from our classmates. Then that was that and no one ever said anything; until a substitute came and would also expect a girl and it’d happen again. He even got called Alice but one substitue.

I know that’s just one case, but I just always felt so sorry for him when he got picked on and remember him not liking his name. So if it were me, I would choose Elliot or Elijah.

But I do think it’s a manly name. Especially with a strong middle name like James or Alexander.

**oops sorry I meant to say "but that was just one substitute"

I only know one Ellis, and she’s a girl.
I also don’t think a middle name can make it sound stronger or more masculine, as in class he’ll only really go by his first name, and teachers often don’t look at the middle names (I’m a teacher so I know this problem all too well). If you’re worried, like the others have suggested I’d go with Elliot or Elijah, which are both great names and you could always give him the nickname Ellis. I also like Elijah or Elliot goes better with Tate than Ellis does.

Ellis is for sure a boys’ name. Just because a few stray parents decide to torture their girls with boys names doesn’t mean that no boy should ever have that name again. To be honest, I’ve never met an Ellis, but I’d imagine a boy. I think Ellis with the nickname El is cute (I know a boy named Elliot with the nickname El). Ellis goes well with Tate IMO.

Did you know that Emily Bronte went by the nom de plume Ellis Bell when writing as a man.

We named our kid Ellis James and we love it. Ellis was his fraternal grandmother’s name and James is my middle name. We’re just really lazy and don’t like to think of new names.

I think if you're worried about a name dictating how masculine your child will be, you're not going to be a very good parent.
