Anything that ends in the "ee" sound has a tendency to be a nn we give to little kids to be cutsey. That doesn’t mean it can’t be a name, it just means it probably came from something. Nicknames don’t have to be shorter, they’re just something we thought was cute to call our 2-year-old.

My husbands full name is Johnny. Use it if you like it. It can always be shortened later to John.

All three of your examples (Cash, Depp, Carson) are only NICKNAMED Johnny. Depp and Carson’s real names are John and Cash’s was JR but was changed to John when he was in the military.

The goal is to give your child a name that will carry him through his Whole Life.
If you use John, he can be Johnny as a child, and then John as an adult, should he wish to be a doctor, businessman, etc...
The examples you cited are of people in the Entertainment industry, who use their Nicknames.
In the real work world most men want a more mature, real name.
