Why vs. Not vs. Salome

I really like the name Salome for our little girl. It’s pronounced Sah-lohm with the long o sound and the e being silent. It is a biblical name. Salome was one of the women that went to Jesus’ tomb. I posted earlier and didn’t get much response, but what I got was all no. Please let me know why it’s not a good name. Thanks.

I think it’s a very pretty name.

My issue with it is that while one of the Biblical Salomes was at Jesus’ tomb, the Other one was the seductress who demanded the head of John the Baptist on a platter. I think she is the one most Christians remember.
So, personally I find that negative association too powerful, but maybe that’s just me...

I suppose some just find it too different.

Other possibilities

Simone
Selah (say-la; also Biblical)
Soleil

It’s a good name people on here just don’t like names they don’t know or aren’t popular. This site is all about the top 100 and that’s that, even nice names like David and Kathy get hammerd? These are just people on the internet whose opinions don’t really matter anyway if you love it use it! And what a postion for Salome in the Bible!!!! Need middle names?

I understand what your saying first poster but there’s always going to be a name where there will be bad memories. I have a brother named Cameron who is a pain in the but, at work there is a boy Cameron who is the same. Yet I met a girl named Camryn and she was sweet and nothing at all like the boys. There was a Jeffrey who murdered a bunch of people whenever it was and I know a Jeffrey my age who is a sweetie so you know.

I like it just fine. I am lutheran, and once our Pastor taught us that Salome means "peace be with you" so during a peace greeting with another that day, we all said "Salome" instead. It was an interesting twist. I love biblical names, and I find it hard to find lovely girl biblical names, that aren’t so common as Ruth or Rebecca, so I think you should go for it!

I agree that all names have potentially negative associations, but some are more powerful than others.

Yes, Salome means peace, and yes, there was a Salome at Christ’s tomb, but I think the Salome most people think of is the one who asked for John the Baptist to be beheaded as a "love gift."
It’s one of the most famous stories in the Bible, and for a lot of people, Salome is up there with Jezebel and Delilah (another Biblical seductress whose name is starting to be used again).

If the op loves it, she should use it!

I just think what’s nice about this site is that you can at least be informed about the name before you make the choice.
Also, she was asking why people might not like it, and I think that’s probably why.

How do you all feel about Selah?

I just don’t think it’s an attractive name and I don’t care about whether or not this woman was at Jesus’ tomb or not. She’s not alive now and you’re not naming your daughter after her so why should it matter?

Kids are named Charles all the time. It’s not a problem until someone says, "Oh, you’re naming him after Charles Manson?"

Honestly, I don’t like it but there is worst out there. I don’t care a lot for the Top 100 and if you feel that way, you don’t really have a reason to be here. People want other opinions and to hear what their

Salome reminds me of Shalom and Salami.

I agree, if you love the name, then you should use it...I think alot of people aren’t familiar w/ religion these days anyway. The Bible speaks of " the love of the greater number cooling off" and "living in the last days" both of which seem to be so true. That being said, she did ask "why" people weren’t loving the name. Well, because of the only 2 birthdays celebrated in the whole Bible, she- Salome took the request of her mother Herodius and seduced King Herod and asked for John the Baptizers head on a platter for his birthday! With that being the case I find it a little difficult wanting to name my daughter that, as well as the Jezebel and Delilah names. Everyone has the right to choose a name, so if you love it, then use it. But, these are the reasons I voted no in the first poll. :)

What are you even talking about Selah whole lotta cabbage?

Selah is used as a break in Psalms to mean to pause and reflect what you have sang. My husband is a worship director at a church so I find it quite fitting.

I think first of Salome in Oscar Wilde who was also a necrophile-so add seductress to this and wowee what an association for a girl to grow up with sorry. This has nothing to do with a name being common or not.

I posted this but you must not have read/seen it-it includes all of the mythology/legend/references

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salome

No one is trying to ’bash’ the name, just making sure if you love the name you go into it with eyes wide open. Also, everyone will pronounce it Sall-oh-may so you have a lifetime of correcting pronunciation as well.

I think Selah is gorgeous. We know one.
Her name is Selah Rose, and her brother is Noah.

I think it’s prettier every time I hear it, and it fits right in with names in style now, but is still unique.

Another unique Biblical choice is Tirza(h).

To the poster: I think if you teach your daughter the meaning behind why YOU choose this name, a woman who came to Jesus’s aide, than it doesn’t matter what the other references are. There are so many other names that have long been "reused" and referring to someone else’s comment about lack of religious minds, then there will be so many folks out there who will have no clue as to which Salome you are referring the name to. It’s like everything else, it’s only negative if you feel negative, but if you think of positively, than that’s you, and it should be your call. I love the "brighter" side of it, don’t you. And still I reminded of Shakepeare, "A Rose by any other name would still smell as sweet". And look at all the controversy there!-geez whole new subject-yay?

I’ve never met anyone with this name before. In fact, I only know it because of Bible reference. It’s uncommon and you’ll always have people as about it. You can explain to them that she was one of the women who went to Jesus’ tomb. And it may open up a great opportunity to spread the word of Christ (if you are spiritual, if the situation is right, and you feel comfortable with that).

As for it having "bad connotations". Every name has that! Don’t even worry about that unless its Adolph or Osama or something like that. Just ignore comments like those.

It is by no means an "ugly" name. It doesn’t sound made up. It isn’t a name you’ll hear every day. It doesn’t look like an illiterate came up with the name. It doesn’t sound "child-ish" or "old lady-ish".

Like one of the pp, if you love the name, that’s great! Just know that people will mispronounce it and spell it incorrectly. But people do that all the time with "more common" names. So just go into this expecting a wide variety of responses.

It’s just different and uncommon. There’s nothing wrong with it. Personally, I think it’s pretty. So if you love it, go for it.

I also think Selah is gorgeous as well.

Thanks for all of your help everyone! I am still torn between the two, but you have helped point out some big things that will help me make us make our decision on whether we like these names or not.

Can anyone think of other names that have to do with worship and praise? Preferably Greek or Hebrew terms used in the Bible?
