Ashby vs. Girl? vs. Boy?

Hi, my name is Julie and I am going to be an aunt. My brother, Jacob, and my sister-in-law, Kate, are expecting their first baby. They don’t know the sex yet. Kate announced the other day that they both really like the name Ashby...Jacob likes it for a girl, but Kate likes it for a boy. They know I like to comment on this site, and they asked me to see which sex you liked the name better for? They also asked for more fn suggestions and for some mn suggestions. Thank you, Julie, Jacob, & Kate!

It’s a boy name and it shouldn’t even be a name. It’s horrible I am so disappointed in the names today what is wrong with the world?

I don’t like Ashby for either. I think it sounds bad. I can’t imagine an adult going in for a job interview with the name Ashby. Does not give any type of professional vibe. I guess it would be ok for a kid, but people grow up.

Wow um thanks I guess. Any other acceptable name suggestions?

Yeah something that makes sense and ages well. Since they both like Ash why not Ashley or Ashlyn? Aislinn it means dream?

I’ll have to ask about Ashlyn, but I know they don’t like Ashley. Thanks.

I agree with the first two posters except that Ashby sounds quite feminine to me. What type of name are they looking for? Cute? Unique? Girly?

Well they don’t know if they are having a boy or a girl yet. They want the name to be cute, unique, and spunky.

I will show them the list of names. Thanks!

I automatically think girl but that could just be because my name is Ashley

Hey, there’s a baseball player for the Chicago Cubs his name is Koyie Hill. I thought of this when you said cute and spunky Koyie is said (Koy-ee) it means quiet I love his name and I know him personally before he got the big leagues and maybe they’ll like Conall? (Con-null) GL!

It’s one of those names that just doesn’t sound right. Like it would have been goood on a boy if people hadn’t started using it for girls, except that it doesn’t quite sound like a name. I dont’ really know how to describe it.
Of the names you listed (if your sister likes them) I think Amelia, Adeline or Ashlyn are best.

Koyie is cute. Thanks.

Pp, I kinda see what your saying. Thanks!

I like it better for a girl, but I think it could work on either. I like Ashton better for a boy, it’s a little more masculine to me. GL

My daughter’s name is Ashby. It’s a family name. She’s 20 now and a student at NYU and she and her friends love her name.

I’m totally okay that not many are fans of the name Ashby. I’m Ashby Jean, a girl and I love my name. I’ve never in 35 years had one person react negatively. And when you hear a very unique name for the first time, I’d think our faces show a truthful reaction. I always hear, " Oh, I love your name!" Or "That’s so cute!" Eh, just my two cents. Just thought I’d toss out my experience in case someone could benefit. :)

My 10 month old daughter is named Ashby. We love the name! I’ve never had anyone tell us it’s strange, we only get ’oh that’s pretty/unique/different’ comments. I automatically see it as a girls name but then again not many boys names end in -y (maybe except Anthony, Henry etc).

My name IS Ashby and I am a GIRL. It is from a last name of a dead Civil War cousin, it comes from England and it means grower of Ash Trees. Ashley is considered a boy’s name. I had a male Ashley in the same class for three years. It was kind of funny. I love my name and no one can think of any other name to fit me. Those comments about it being ugly are kind of rude and hurtful. Thanks folks!

My 13-year-old daughter is named Ashby Brienne. We actually came up with "Ashby" as a first name off the side of a truck we saw on the freeway. It is unique and she’s is unique, intensely smart, artistic and actually a knock-out. We wanted a name that WAS uncommon. Both of her’s fit that parameter. We wouldn’t change it for the world. Interestingly, her 11-year-old sister is named Kyla Blue...

My son’s name is Ashby which was a popular Old English name in the 1800’s. The names I see these days are disappointing. Everyone is trying so hard to have POPULAR names thy are all getting old. I’m seeing suggested names that have been the most popular in the past 10 years. How many Mckaylas, or Harpers, or Ashleigh, Addison, Sage, Taylor or are walking the Earth now. I named my daughter piper 16 years ago. Piper from the bird. Everyone hated it. Now people are throwing it out there. A name is special. All of my kids have the same middle name REEF... after the fact that I love the ocean. Give your child a name that is the best reflection of who you are and your dreams for your child.

I think it’s a great name. People need to chill the heck out and respect other people’s positions. Im sure the first two posts names were as boring as their insights

My name is Ashby, and I’m a boy, I love my name, and no one should criticize you for naming your child. It’s a family name for me, so I carry it with pride!

My name is Ashby. I have a family member on my dads side who is a dead and fought in the Civil War. I like my name and I don’t meet many people with this name. I have only met a few people with my name and I think that is pretty cool.

So, I wanted to comment just in case people saw the first couple comments and got turned off by it. The name is a great and unique name. My niece’s name is Ashby Rose and the name fits her wonderfully. Just because a name isn’t in the top 100 most common names does not make it "unprofessional". The persons actions are what help somebody to seem professional. Please just use your own judgment and the judgment of people in your life who you trust but keep in mind that regardless of the name, it is more important to teach a child manners and the proper way to act so that they can succeed as an adult rather than how their name sounds to a certain person.

My daughter is called Ashby. She’s 10 months. Her middle name is Willow and everyone always says it’s a beautiful name.
There will always be cruel people in the world to suggest someone has an ugly name. Very sad

My daughter Ashby is 7. We named her after Ashby-de-la-Zouch where I was born.
People seem to genuinely like it and unlike other uncommon names I rarely have to spell it people just know 😀
