thoughts on vs. Mamie
While searching names, hubby and I came across the name Mamie (may-mee). It’s a nickname for Margaret and Mary and we think it’s cute. We like these old-fashioned nickname names but not the popular ones coming into style like Ellie/Ella/Lily/Mattie etc. So what do you think? Is it just too weird/old or do you like it? Thanks, Bridget

We’re thinking of using it as a full name.

Maemi or Maymie would be better because mamie (mam-e) is what i call my grandmother.
I love old fashion names but I’m not a fan of this one. It sound like a name children may have used to refer to their grandmother or nanny at one time. I also think it will be mispronoused to sound like "mommy" pretty reguarly. How about the name Millie? Its not super popular or trendy and much cuter IMO.

Everytime I hear Mamie, I think of Gone With The Wind ( Scarlett’s "nanny"), and I think a lot of other people will too!

We also think the same thing about it sounding like a name you call your grandmother. We have considered Millie but we’re beginning to hear it more and more and we don’t really want a name that’s going to become trendy. Other names we like are:
Nell/Nellie (Eleanor/Penelope)
Gwen/Gwennie (Gwendolyn)
Hattie (Harriet)
Tillie (Matilda)

Odessa nn Dessy is adorable. I also like Leonora, Tabitha, Esther. I forgot to mention we also like Tillie as a nn for Ottilie. And Romilly nn Romy. WDYT?

Oh, now you are making it hard! I went back into my family tree, and found Odessa and Esther- I love them both! My great aunt- born in the 20’s, was Odessa, and they called her Dess, Dessa, and Dessy. I think Tabitha is cute, we considered it, but it did not go with our last name, nn Tabby. Leonora is great as well, nn Nora and Leo, I like Romy as well. Looks like you are going to have a tough time!

I love it and it’s on my list too:) Its gorgeous and fits in with all the other old fashioned names.
I love Naomi nn Mimi and I’ve heard that for Grandma’s too but whats wrong with our grandmothers to be ashamed of a way to call them thats not commenly used in the us. It’s not like your naming her Grammy, Grandma or Nana.

Yes we are going to have a tough time. Although baby’s not due for quiet a while so we’v got time still. We’re just skimming through names and these are the ones we love so far. So hubby and I will look further into names, but we love Mamie, Romy/Romilly, Tillie/Ottilie and from your suggestions I love Esther, Odessa, Tabitha, leonora and Naomi.
Thanks so far everyone~ Bridget

Mamie was my Great grandmother’s name (nn for Mary)- but that’s not going to stop us from using it if we have another girl! It’s adorable. Our first daughter is Tallulah Rose.

Love it, but it is my daughter’s nickname!
People make positive comments about her name and how cute it is all the time...go for it.
