Is "Margaret" too old-fashioned? vs. Yes vs. No
A lot of older names are coming back "in" -Olivia, Madeline, Clara, etc. I want an older name that isn’t popular. I love Margaret, but my husband is convinced it sounds like a 70 year old woman’s name. I keep telling him she won’t be Margaret until she grows up, she’ll be "Maggie." Is Margaret TOO old fashioned?

I don’t think Margaret is too old fashion, but if your husband doesn’t like it I would let it go and look for another name. Its important you both love the name.

Maragaet is a great adult name and Maggie is the cutest nn ever! Although my mom is Margaret, and she went by Grit when she was a kid, and now she goes by Maggie as an adult. Anyway, i think it’s great and it SHOULD come back! Margaretta and Margurite are also cute variations if you can’t both agree on Maragaret.

I am all for bringing names back but I’m not sure Margaret ever went away. It’s been dropping (it’s 187 in 2009) but it’s still out there. A lot. While a name like Clara is slowing gaining speed, it’s still just barely in the 100’s. Stella has made major history in jumping the list and is 124.
Magdalene isn’t even in the top 1000 for the past 10 years. That’s sad.
Margaret isn’t pretty to me.

I don’t think Magdalene will ever make a big bang cuz Mary Magdalene was a prostitue in the Bible, and anyone who knows the Bible probably doesn’t want to name their kid that. Of course I would say anyone who doesn’t know the Bible probably doesn’t feel like name their kid that either, cuz even if YOU don’t know, there are about 4 billion other people in the world who DO.

That is a very simplistic reading of the Mary Magdalene story.
Op,
I love the name Maggie.
I’m not nuts about Margaret, but it’s great to give your girl options.
You could also do something like Margo.
I considered Margaret-Alice (after my dh’s grandmas) with Maisie as the nn, but we had boys.
Greta, Daisy, Peg, and Peggy, are other sweet Margaret nns.
gl!
PS I don’t know any little ones going by Margaret, but I know two little Maggies, and they fit in just fine.

My grandma’s name was actually Madeline, and I was so set on it, but then I met two little babies named Madeline, and saw how popular it was. >.< Thanks for the opinion and suggestions for alternatives, I really appreciate them.
