I think Evangelyn might be pronounced e-van-ge-lyn and I’m assuming you want the ending to sound like EEN. If that’s the case I’d go with Evangeline. Either spelling of Winter would be fine.

Actually, we want the end to sound like "IN" (as in Catherine - how come nobody mispronounced that as "Cathereen?" but that’s not my point, lol), regardless of whether it ends -line or -lyn.

Evangeline Winter. The Ys are unnecessary.

StraightTalker, you are wrong on how to pronounce this name. There are 2 ways: -line or -leen. There is no -lyn in this name. (ee VAN jeh line); (ee VAN jeh leen) If you are looking for an "IN" or "LYN" ending, this name is not the one. And spelling it Evangelyn to suit your wants makes it look like a made up downmarket name.

WOW, i don’t think this last anonymous person realizes that... IT’S NOT THEIR KID ! I’m pretty sure that StraightTalker can pronounce it anyway they please. And trust me, it does not sound like a "made up downmarket name." It’s beautiful any way it’s spelt and I especially like the unique choice for pronunciation.
So all this to say... I like Evangelyn Winter.

It doesn’t matter. Evangeline is pronounced (ee VAN jeh line) or (ee VAN jeh leen). You can’t just go changing the pronunciation of names to suit yourself. If you don’t like how a name is pronounced, then pick a different one. Don’t just go changing the spelling and pronunciation.
How about Evelyn, which is very similar.

And the unnecessary ys in Evangelyn Wynter just makes a beautiful name seem trashy.

If it’s Evangelyn then it’s not Evangeline so it can be pronounced "lynn" instead of "line". Did you write the laws on naming babies? I’m pretty sure there aren’t any rules which is what makes this process so fun. Many people want to pick a unique name and I agree that Evangelyn is the best choice.

PP, it’s called the english language. There are no laws, but there are rules. Obviously, you didn’t major in English in college. I can’t name my son Henry then pronouce/spell it like Gary, and expect everyone to know how you want to pronounce/spell the name. I don’t like "made up" or "trendiegh spellings of perfectly beautiful names. It makes you and your child look uneducated/illiterate.

Oh, so sorry Mr./Mrs. Anonymous. I actually do happen to have a major in English. I also teach English at a local high school. One thing that I do know is that names are exempt from English grammar. They are not used to describe or define persons, places, or things, nor are they used to show the actions of persons, places, or things. They are simply there to NAME persons, places, and things. There are no rules when it comes to names. Every single name was created by someone or from something.
Please excuse me. I must have forgotten that your opinion is the only one that matters.

Names are not made up by someone. They are derived from root words in languages that have been around for hundreds/thousands of years. But since you have an English degree, you should know that already.

Evangeline is already a different (though totally great!) name; I would stick with the conventional spelling of it because of that..

Wow - I hadn’t read all the rude comments above. However you want to spell it is great! Sheesh. I have to agree with Anonymous’ point, however - those made-up spellings/pronunciations do seem more common among lower-middle class socioeconomic groups, but that is totally cool. Who cares? (well, I guess I would, hence I like Evangeline, and I pronounce it LEEN.). My two cents. Not worth anything when you’re signing the birth certificate!

Really? The ONLY acceptable pronunciations are the -line and -leen endings? Huh. I’ll have to tell my friend (whose parents both have doctorate degrees, her mother a doctorate in ENGLISH) that her parents have been mispronouncing her name for the last 25 years! Honestly, this is the only Evangeline I’ve EVER met IRL, and I think it’s completely acceptable that Evangeline falls into the same category as Corrine - a name with multiple correct pronunciations.

Oh, BTW, I suggest you Google the spellings "Evangelyn" and "Evangelynn." Both appear to have precedent as real names.
