Im sorry but when i read that I pronounce it Cal-an which is a boys name. If you want to call your daughter kaylan why not pronounce it that way

Because that is the spelling we fell in love with after reading the books it came from. I really like it and have not found another spelling we prefer.

I have to agree with the first poster, I would not pronounce it how you have it spelled and I would assume boy the way you have it spelled.
Kaylan would be better

have you considered the speling Kaylyn or Kaylen? i think those will make it easier for people to know how to pronounce it.

Thank you all for your comments. The spelling won’t be changed as I love it just the way it is and if people need to ask how to pronounce it then so be it. Its not the end of the world as there are plenty of names that don’t look exactly how they are spelt. Plus this spelling is no where near as bizarre as my own name so I am ok with that.
Love some of the suggestions you gave me so a big thanks for those. Names like Grace, Mackenzie, Amalie (love it), Elizabeth, Quinn and Alice. There are some great choices there and I really appreciate your help.

I love the name Kahlan!!! Im 29 weeks pregnant and we will be naming our daughter Kahlan, people tryed to tell us the same thing that we should think about another way to spell it, we are not changing our mind, we just need help with the secound name as well, we have Kahlan Elise and Kahlan Elizabeth, please some help, thanks!!!

So funny. I just stumbled upon this when I googled the name that my husband and I intend to name our daughter (we find out in November if it is in fact going to be a girl) and the name we’ve chosen is Kahlan Elise. Kahlan from The Sword of Truth series. And I agree...initially I thought maybe I should change the spelling, but I love it exactly the way that it is and it’s unique and not a name you’ll find often!! Not even the other spellings are common names.

hello, would love to know what you went for it the end, Kahlan has also made it to my short list but with a surname like Coffey (pronounced coffee like the drink) its a tricky one to find a middle name for!
made me laugh people saying you should change the spelling you could spell it the irish way which is Caoilainn even harder to pronounce from the spelling! :)

We named our daughter Kahlan Noelle. People yelled at us all the time to change the spelling, because people will pronounce it wrong. My husband and I are big fans of the Terry Goodkind books and we were dead set on spelling it Kahlan. It is not to hard for people to get right, and those who can\’t will have to get over it. We love the name and exactly how it is spelled.

This is great I’m 5 months and 10 days. Definitely going with Kahlan Marie :) people are rude. It’s your decision how to spell her name and I love the original spelling. I thought a different spelling would help with pronouncing the name but nothing but the original appeals to my husband or I nearly as much as Kahlan.

I like how even though you asked for opinions on middle names everyone was trying to convince you to change the spelling. Even after you explained the origins of the name.
I’m also pregnant and if it’s a girl, am probably going with Kahlan. Also a fan of the series. <3 still need middle name ideas though.

My husband and I are planning a baby. Not pregnant yet!!! But we too, love the name Kahlan, because we also love the books! There was another name in those books that I fell in love with, but I still have some work to do on hubby for it. Zedd’s wife’s name was Erilyn. I love that name too! Now to pick a boys name. My husband is a III in his family, and I don’t want to continue the tradition. I don’t think he does either. His name is Milford Rudolph III. We haven’t really even talked about a boys name yet.

I am 7 weeks pregnant and if we have a girl we are going to name her Kahlan Arya. Arya being a character from game of thrones. I love that name.

I adore the name Kahlan! I am not pregnant yet but this is already the babies predestined name! Although not for the same reasons as some others on here :) my husband is a huge supeman fan so if it’s a boy it’ll be Kalel but if a girl Kahlan that way either way we get a Kal :)

Kahlan actually has Irish and English origins. In Ireland it means "strong leader" and in England it means "beauty". one of my twins has this name and her middle name is Louise after her great grandma.

We went with kahlan arya….. kept the literary theme going…..

My daughters name is Kahlan Rose. This is the original spelling of the name pronounced Kay-Lan. This is an old Irish name which means strong leader. It is a beautiful name spelled as is. My maiden name ends in lan and is pronounced the same way this is how the name it ment to be spelled and pronounced. Maybe us Irish fokes just talk funny. I got a lot of pressure to spell her name differently and did not cave stay strong!

We have a Kahlan (girl) born in 2010. Kahlan was named after Kahlan in the Terry Goodkind series. Her middle name (Rae) is shared with my sister. Kahlan Rae fits her perfect. Many people have told me that her name isn’t spelled correctly and there are places that call her "Collin". Terry Goodkind pronounces it Kay-len in the audiobooks.
