Hey Everyone, So we have a daughter and expecting another baby (too soon to tell ;) and I’ve always loved the name Sophia but the on the day of at the hospital I chose to go w/ my husbands choice. Just this month a friend of mine had a daughter and named her Sophia. :( WDYT....should I still use it? You know how ppl can be and I just don’t want to constantly hear" Oh you took my name" What are your thoughts on this? Thanks~Maria

It depends how close the friend is, and how often you see her. If you’re not best friends, and you don’t see her every day, I don’t think there’s a problem. Use what you love. She won’t think you stole her name.

If she is your best friend or you do see her a lot, maybe use a variant, or something similar, like Sophie, Sephira, Sienna, Sailor...etc.

I have two friend that both named their daughters Audrey. The second mom just said to the first, "Just so you know, we’ve always loved this name and we’re not naming her after your daughter." If they do end up being close friends, they might even like it. Just make sure they don’t have the same middle name or initials, too. And who knows, maybe you’ll have a boy this time, and can save Sophia for another couple years!

The thing is... Sophia is/has been a top 5 name for a couple years now. So, it’s not like it’s a rare name and you would be taking away part of the kid’s uniqueness. You know? You can always use a different nn... Sophie, Phi, and Lia all work. If you’re not close, go for it. If you are close, try to find something else you love and if you keep coming back to the name use it anyway. Or either way you could always use it as a mn...

Funny, it used to be that ever family had its Mary and Sue and John and Robert and no one batted an eyelash. Who cares if they’ve used the name? It’s not like you’re inventing it, and it is hardly an obscure name, having been in the top 5 for the past few years. I think we ought to stop worrying whether out kids have individual names, and more about whether they ARE individuals. Go ahead, use the name you love.

My brother is Michael and my cousin is Michael...it was never a big deal. They see each other all the time.

I’d simply ask your friend. When I was pregnant with our daughter, we loved the name Addison but one of my friends who lives in a different city had a 5 year old with that name. I asked her what she thought about us using the name saying it was the only name we agreed upon at the time (it was). She didn’t care at all and said go for it. We ended up finding a different name but I’m still glad we asked. Some people can be weird about things like this and while they don’t own the name I think its curteous to ask their opinion and eliminate any possible drama.

Nobody has rights to a name, so I wouldn’t ask permission....If you are comfortable using the same name as your friend, then go for it. If you think it would bother you perhaps you could use it as a mn. GL with your decision!

personally, i wouldn’t still use it, if i did it would be as a middle name, but if you really want to use it then go ahead and use it.
