Gema vs. Gemma

Hello! I really like the name Gema (I’m Spanish and my husband is British, now, we live in UK). My question is: I like the name with an "m". And Spanish is pronounced: "Hema". As Gemma is widely used, I thought that this is more "different" and original (Gema is the Spanish form of Gemma). And I like how it is pronounced. What do you think? Thanks!

I live in the UK too, and I have to be honest, if I were to see Gema on a form/letter ect, I would assume it was pronounced the same as Gemma. I think she’ll have a few problems correcting people on how it’s pronounced. It is a pretty name though.

Hema reminds me of blood, i.e, hematoma, hemaphilia, etc. If thats the way its pronounced I would look for another name.

I prefer Gemma. Hema reminds me of henna... like henna tatoos.

i agree with the first poster, i live in England, and although i love Spanish names, with an English sounding surname, which i presume your daughter would have, i would pronounce the name as gem-a, and i think that people would spell it as Gemma on hearing it, it’s not very common over here, so i say just spell it Gemma, if you want to pronounce it the Spanish way at home, that’s fine

I must also say that Gemma is the Catalan form of the name. (Catalan, Valencian... and so on)

I think that given your child will probably have an english last name, you should celebrate your side and call her gema. Although, be prepared for the pronunciation to be widely accepted as Gemma. At home, you pronounce her name properly and let her decide if she should correct people or not. Being a migrant, you know that people will not always appreciate non english pronunciation . That doesn’t mean you need to give I to it!!!

Hi. MY name is Gema, and I am from Mexico. I love the way my name sounds, and I think it’s beautiful. I think most people will confuse it though and make it sound really weird like He-ma(read that in english), I read a comment that said oh if it sounds like hena pick another name, no it doesn’t, it sounds nothing like it. Spanish is a totally different language and the Ge and ma make the name sound beautiful, I love the Spanish language. I think you should honor your roots and pick the "gema" form, its more UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL in my opinion. Gemma is so overplayed, and ehh, a little boring in my opinion, but if you do choose the GEMA form your daughter will have to correct them over and over again, because well many English people do not exactly want to pronounce it in Spanish, or some can’t. But in all and all, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, go with what your heart desires. :)
