Gail vs. Boy or vs. Girl?
What gender comes to mind first when using the name "Gail"? It is a family name and would be used for our child’s middle name, but I do not want to say the gender of our baby or the family member because I want honest answers of if you think boy or girl when you hear it. Thanks!

My mother has many friends named Gail, they are all women. I can’t see it as a boy’s name at all. Just my opinion, though. I think as a middle name it should be fine for either gender, so long as the first name is either very strong for a boy or sweet and girly for a girl.

I think girl (especially because of Abigail) Now that I think of it I have heard of boys with the name Gail. Im thinking you are using it for a boy, but either way I think its fine because its a middle and its after someone. gl!

I have only heard Gail used on females. To me it is way too feminine to use on a male. I do not think a male would like the name even as a mn. If it was me, I would not use it for a male. Maybe change it up a little like Gabe or Dale.

It depends. I’m related to a Gayle (female) and have heard of women called Gail, however, one of my favourite books has a male character named Gale. It’s really the spelling that makes it gender dependent.

Gail - girl
Gale - boy (I have a grandpa named this)
Gale - boy (I have a grandpa named this)
I like the name and don’t understand gender stereotyping.

I’m kinda late to the string here, but since I stumbled upon it I thought I’d offer up another spelling: Gael. Very masculine, in my opinion. Likely Irish or Scottish roots, from the word Gaelic.

I am also late to the string but in my long experience Gail and Gayle have all been girls names. Gale or Gael (I’ve seen both) are men’s names

Usually gail or gayle = female. Usually gale = male. Not always. Other spellings seem to be open to both.

I’m assuming you want to use Gail for a middle name for a boy - which I think is fine, but I would be sure to use a very masculine first name :) Good luck!
