My wife is Russian, born and raised, and says that Aleksander spelling "honor her heritage" but I really like the traditional spelling. Should I give in?

I think if the baby will be raised in the US, it will be easier for him to go through life with the spelling Alexander.

Yes, I agree... and you could go with a Russian middle name

Alexander Nikolai?

As an elementary teacher for 30+ years, please use the traditional English spelling versus Russian -- there are other ways to honor her heritage (middle name), activities, things at home, etc. Despite the cultural tie, I’d actually recommend all parents stop using unique ways to spell traditional names. They can’t even spell them on their own when in school! :)

This is great because my name is Aleksander and my mom is Russian and she named me this because it is the direct translation of eastern European spellings of this name. These people don't know what they are talking about, everyone thinks I have a cool spelling of a name at school, and I am happy about it because I embrace the Russian in me, but my other side of the family doesn't like my name because I was named after Alexander the Great and he destroyed Iran and they are Iranian, so If you are also Iranian then don't name your kid Alexander or Aleksander at all. By the way I know this is 7 years late.
