I don’t understand why people think changing the spelling looks good. It looks so uneducated. I don’t think boyish names are suited for a "little princess". Since you used that phrase, can you actually picture a real Princess or Queen named River?
There is nothing wrong with changing the spelling, and it doesnt make it look uneducated. My name is Kaitlynn and its different spelling but cute. And my daughters name is Karsynn, its a different spelling and cute!
I say name her what your heart tells you. If you really like it, it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks.
I really love the name personally!

Karsynn is cute? People think that changing the spelling makes a name less masculine. It really doesn’t. It sounds the same, doesn’t it? Carson is a boy name. Changing the spelling doesn’t change that fact. I agree that Ryver looks horrible. If you want to name her River, use this spelling. It looks much better.

Excuse me! Karsynn is a effin cute girl name!! Seriously I dont think it matters anymore boy or girl I know someone who named there daughter aidyn, I also know someone who named there daughter jaidan. so I honestly dont think it really matters. As long as you like the name. And to me Karsynn is a girl name. I think i dont like it for a boy.

I agree, Ryver is ridiculous. I dont think its feminine enough, but maybe as a middle name?
Bailey River
Aurora River
Jasmine River
something like that would be prettier in my opinion

What would you do if you met a boy named Evangeline, and called him Evan for short?? It looks stupid, youre child deserves a name that fits their gender. Soft feminine for girls, masculine and strong for boys.

I agree with the common sense posters on here that River has no femininity about it. This trend is annoying and you know who will dislike it the most? your sadly-named child.

It’s not that bad on a girl, IMO, I kind of like it, but please don’t change the spelling. Ryver is horrid, it makes the name look harsh, and looks like it rhymes with the boy name Ryder...

I think if you really want to use it, you should use it as a middle name. Atleast then you would be giving your child the choice to have a boy name or a girl name. I like the suggestion of Eden River. I completely agree with the poster who said that girls names should be soft and feminine. When I see a boy name on a girl, I can’t help but think teen mom. Same with different spellings. Something like Karsynn or Ryver makes me think "there goes another child who’s teen mommy thought they were being unique".
Me and my sisters have unisex/boy names and we love our names and my mother wasn’t a teen mom she just loved the names and the meaning of the names so she used them I don’t see anything wrong with River for a girl its cute

Please dont use this site to get some peoples opinions! I really like some boy name for girls ex. Bryce,Elliot,Chayse etc. I posted a poll and it was harsh, when I ask my family and friends about the names they love them. Go with what you feel.

We are expecting our second child in July and it’s a girl. Our first child is a boy and we named him Fox! We are planning to name our baby girl River too and are having trouble deciding on a middle name. But I say screw everyone who is being rude about your name choice...name your child whatever you like, no matter what people think. And I DON’T think she’ll get made fun of for being name River. Everybody loves my son’s name and our soon to daughter’s name!!! :-) Good luck with finding a middle name - let you know if we think of one soon. Take care!

PS - I don’t think the name River on a girl is boyish at all or that River is a boys name! If any of you ever saw the movie Serenity than you would know that they used the name River for a girl in the movie and once you see a girl named River than you will realize it’s quite pretty and feminine!!!!

My son’s name is River (James River, actually, but he goes by River) and I was told by quite a few people that it was too feminine! You can’t win for losin’ :)
But I agree...please skip the spelling changes in the name, She’ll already have an unusual name. No need for her to also have to corect spelling the rest of her life.

I am naming my daughter River Marie. I love the name. My husband heard it on Serenity and we are hooked. There are A LOT worse names out there than River. Name your daughter whatever you want, don’t listen to anyone but your heart and your husband.

We are naming our daughter River Leigh and we love it! It’s a beautiful name for a girl and it can also be a strong name for a boy. It really doesn’t matter what people think about the name of your child, they can name their own children... even if we wouldn’t choose the names that they like.

Im naming my daughter due in a couple months River Violet. I think it’s such a beautiful name and very girly. We were considering it for if we had a boy but thought it was way better for a girl.

I like the name River and this is what I plan to call my third child/second daughter. I have told friends and family from the beginning and many were appalled at the idea - however, most have come around and are encouraging me to use the name now! I just hope my daughter likes it. Funnily enough, I\’ve tried so hard to find a baby name other than River for this reason but it seems to keep coming back.

We named our daughter River Natalie and we get compliments on it all the time! We gave her a feminine middle name in case she eants to go by that in the future. Between Firefly and Doctor Who, I will always see River as a girl’s name. We got some bad responses from family members at first but they grew to love it just as much as we do. I dislike Ryver, though, it would be pronounced "ry-ver" in my head.

I have a baby on the way and if it’s a girl we are going to name her River. I don’t think it should be simplified to either male or female. It can be used for whatever your preference or how ever it feels to you. That’s the beauty of nature names... However, My husband disagrees and thinks it sounds super feminine. He wasn’t aware that it’s more commonly used as a boys name so his love of it for a girl was based solely on the way it sounds. I love it for a girl. I think it sounds strong and whimsical... Luckily with female pop-culture influences of "Serenity", "Doctor Who", and "my dog skip" (new and old) I don’t think your child will have a hard time:
