Scout is a unisex name, but I think most people would identify it with the female protagonist of To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout is her nickname though; her real name is Jean Louise.

All boy. Everyone always talks about To Kill a Mockingbird but as the above poster said, it’s just her nickname and she was very boyish. Jean Louise just didn’t fit her personality.

I remembered Mockingbird. I’m guessing he didn’t.

I don’t know much about naming dogs or dog toys.

Girl. Regardless if it was her nickname or not, it was HER nickname. Everyone associates the name with a girl.
There’s an actress with the names Scout as well.

Neither. It sounds ridiculous. Can you honestly imagine an adult woman introducing herself as "Scout"? As her real name? If it was a nickname in a book, why would you use it as a given name?

He was thinking of using it for our baby boy. So, no, I can’t imagine how a grown wan would use it.

I remembered the book and thought about a girl using it to be thought of more as a boy. He just thought it was cool.

Time for another option.
