Eirwyn vs. Eirwen

Eirwen (IRE-wen) or Eirwyn (IRE-win)...I love welsh names nad my husband thinks the meaning is lovely- but we’re a bit confused- Eirwen is always listed as a girls name on naming sites and such that we can see but Eirwyn seems to be listed overwhelming more often as a strictly male name except in a few sites that say that its female...anyone have any idea what thoughts?

In my opinion, and i dont really know anything about Welsh names, i think it depends on the spelling. To me, Eirwen looks masculine, while Eirwyn looks feminine. out of curiousity, what is the meaning of that name?

I think it sounds more like a boys name, but I think either way it is hard to pronounce.

Go with the one you like best. Most people won’t know if it is a boy or a girl name. I agree that Eirwyn looks more feminine.

the meaning is ’snow white’. hubby loves the meaning- since she’d be his only daughter and little princess. picking a name he likes is difficult at best- especially a girls name...the only other name he liked so far was Aneira (an-EE-rah) which means Snow

If it’s for a girl the Eirwyn spelling would definately make her life easier.

Here you go: The BBC shows and pronounces; it’s more AY-R than IRE. When you look at the breakdown of Welsh names in general, "wen" is a feminine ending, and "wyn" is a masculine ending.
