Lucia vs. Spelling!
I love the name Lucia ( loo- see- yuh ) but I’m worried that it will get pronounced wrong a lot of the time. Suggestions on a spelling would be great!

Wow, I was about to leave a comment saying that you won’t have trouble with the pronouncation. I’m pretty sure most anyone will pronounce it the way you are hoping. And then I saw the first comment (not sure if that was from the poster or a commenter). But anyway, only the island St. Lucia should be pronounced "LOO-sha." I know several Lucias and they are not LOOsha. It’s a common name in Italy and many other European countires. It’s a pretty name, it is pronounced "Loo -see - yuh" as you want, and I really don’t see you having any problems with it.

"Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia" (Loo-see-yuh)
This is a song we used to sing where I grew up in Norway to celebrate the Saint Lucia. It’s actually more a Swedish holiday than Norwegian. But anyway, it’s pronounced Loo-see-yah without a doubt. The only people who will say Loo-sha would be the ones who only know of the island. I guess people need to do a little more traveling.

Lucia and other variations on Lucy are becoming a very popular name, and I would recommend not messing with the spelling to emphasize the pronunciation. Some names are easier than others, some are more challenging. Lucia is not too tough, and I remember seeing a nurse with that name, and asking her politely how she pronounces it. Would you change the spelling of "Andrea" to Annedrea, just to avoid being mis-called Aundrea?

I would say keep the spelling the way you like it. I will admit I’ve seen this name in print alot and I’ve always wondered how people pronounced it.

I know 2 people with the name and the both pronounce it differently. I think it depends on where you are from. On the show Lost there was a character called Annalucia and it was Loo-see-a. She was Latina. I prefer that way of saying it.

Previous poster who wrote "I guess people need to do a little more traveling." Advice that you might benefit from yourself. This name is used in different cultures where different languages are spoken, thus you will find various pronunciations. I.e. In Spain or latin countries this name is pronounced Lu-see-a. In Italy this woman would likely be called Lu-chee-a and in English Lu-sha is popular. This is a great name used in many different countries.

LucĂa is the spelling you're probably looking for; the accent mark makes sure to add that -ee sound as another syllable

My name is Lusia (I prefer to be called Luci). But people still mispronounce my name has "Loo-sha" even though it's spelled with an S. But in my opinion, it should be spelled Lusia and pronounced "loo-see-yah." But you can spell it which ever way you like.
