With a hyphen I’d say that it means that it’s part of the first name. But hyphens can be confusing. If you want to meld it to the first name, try not putting anything between the two names at all. Just capitalize the letter of the second part of it.

Just to make sure I understand, if I called her Lisa-Marie, it’d be one name, but if I called her Lisa it’d be two?

I believe the dash indicates which names are tied together.
Lisa-Marie Margaret = two first names one middle
Lisa Marie-Margaret= one first two middles
Be careful with hyphens, I heard some parents are using them as part of the name pronunciation. (i.e. La-a is said Ladasha)
I don’t think this will be a problem with Lisa Marie though.

The reason I’m asking this is because I want each of my children to have two middle names and I wasn’t sure if hyphenating a name made it two or not. What is we named her Madison Lisa-Marie Margaret? Would that be 3 middle names or two (as Lisa-Marie is one name)?

A hyphen makes it one name. If you want the 2 names after the first name to be just mns, then do not hypenate.

Madison Lisa-Marie Margaret is idiotic. Sorry, but it is. What an unnecessary long name. Also, why are trying to set up a theme for your future children? It is very limiting.

I would take it to mean the hypehn makes it one name. I hyphenated my daughter’s middle name, Jenna-Ann, so it would be pronounced together. When her name is printed on something in the mail her abbreviation is always Chloe J. because it is considered 1 name. So Lisa-Marie would be one name and Margaret would be considered the middle. Hope I helped some. GL

What theme? Lisa is my mom, Marie is his mom, and Margaret is his sister who passed away 2 years ago. And we love the nn Madi.

The theme of having multiple middle names. What is the point of honoring multiple people in one name by making the name ridiculously long? It makes the gesture less meaningful. Just choose one person and honor future children with the other names.

We have a big family and we both have two middle names. His is actually longer than our daughter’s possible name. Besides, the question was as to whether a hyphen makes it one name or not.

Yes, the hyphen makes it one name.

WHO CARES?

Either way your children will have multiple middle names. Just name them what you want. It’s not like people on this website are English language experts anyway. It’s all a matter of opinion.
