It is also my nickname and my given name is Virginia. In French it can be short for "Gilberte" as in the novel by Colette or Virginie(French version of Virginia, of course) but I’ve also been told it can be short for the French"Ginette" which is considered a bit old-fashioned in France but is used more frequently in other French-speaking areas. Hope that might be helpful :) I really love going by Gigi because it’s memorable and in my opinion has a cheerful ring to it.

Another note about Gigi and French origins: in France, it’s common to take the first syllable of certain names and double it to make a nickname, like as in the novel Gilberte (the feminine version of Gilbert) becomes Gigi but this could also be the case for Giselle, etc., as well.
