Is Julie Outdated? vs. Yes vs. No
My husband and I are expecting our second child, a girl this time. We already have Michael Grady (14 mo.). For our daughter, we really love the way Julie sounds, but not Julia (we prefer the ’ie’ sound). We were all set to name her Julie Reagan, when people started saying that Julie was ’out-dated’, while Julia was ’pretty and less old sounding’. We don’t understand them. Julie and Julia are practically the same, except for the end-sounds. How can one be out-dated, while the other is not? Do any of you have an opinion on this? Do you think it matters? Thanks- Emily and Ben

I think if thats the name you love then who cares what other people say. It’s your precious baby not theirs. I like older names better anyways.

I think Julie is alright, if you’re worried go with Julia and have her nickname be Julie.

I think Julie’s much prettier than Julia, and certainly not outdated. It’s just that Julia is more commonly used. :)

I think Julie was more popular than Julia 20 years ago and now Julia is more popular so people associate Julie with older names. But it’s all opinion- look at all the Emma’s and Ella’s now- that name is "old" because it was popular in the 1900’s!! My point is names do not have dates on them and shouldn’t be called "old".

I like Julie - but it does sound a bit outdated. I think it is because of the trend of names ending in ’a’. Think Stella, Ella, Ava, Emma etc. Go with what you like. It’s best not to tell family/friends what name you are choosing as everyone will have an opinion good or bad.

It is super annoying when people call names "outdated". Julie is a classic, beautiful name that will never go out of style. Some of the girl names I’m considering have been deemed "outdated" by others on this site, but that almost makes me more inclined to choose them because there’s less chance of there being tons of other little girls with that name in my daughter’s class in school ; ).
