Rowan vs. Reuben
Hi everyone. We’re still trying to decide between these two names. When I posted yesterday a few of the commenters said that they would go for Reuben because Rowan is also used on girls sometimes. This is a very valid point but it doesn’t really bother me enough to put me off Rowan. Any other thoughts to help me distinguish the two names from each other and help us choose? Thanks a lot!
The Top Baby Name is...

Reuben

Rowan is a more trendy name while Reuben is a classic. Rowan will go out of style someday whereas I highly doubt Reunen will. Just something for you guys to think about (:

Thanks a lot! It’s a very interesting point and some good advice. I hadn’t considered Rowan trendy before because I don’t know any younger Rowans but it’s good to know that other people will and to think carefully about how the names might be perceived in 20, 30, 50 years time.

I like both.
I did know a little girl Rowan, so it’s hard for me to put that out of my head, though I prefer it on boys (I ’spose you could also throw Ronan or Roman into the mix).
Let’s see, I think at this point Reuben is probably the edgier choice...apart from Hispanic families, I doubt it’s used much, which gives it more of that, "Cutting edge," sound whereas I think Rowan is more clearly in style, though it still has an offbeat quality.
I do think Reuben is more common in Jewish families (it’s Biblical, of course). That isn’t a plus or minus, just throwing it out there. The other obvious connection for some people would be the Reuben sandwich. Yum.
If it helps, Rowan reminds me of names like Greyson, Declan, Oliver, Archer and Leo
Reuben reminds me of names like Judah, Jude, Arlo, Solomon, Moses, Tobias, George
gl and hth!
You can always see what he looks like, or let your nurses vote. :)

I like Rowan.I wouldn’t worry about a few people using it on girls. They are doing that with tons of names these days. It’s impossible to guess which names are safe from that anymore.I really think Rowan is one that will stay more to the male side.
When I hear Reuben I can’t help thinking of two things-the sandwich and the guy from American Idol.

I don’t think Rowan is trendy at all, except on a girl. I LOVE it but I’m not a fan of Reuben at all.
Both names have their downsides...Rowan is used on girls sometimes, Reuben is used on sandwiches sometimes. No biggie either way.
I also like Roman, Ronan and Roan.

Thanks for your comments :) I’m from England so I’ve never heard of the Reuben sandwich or the guy from American Idol. I like Roan. Ronan reminds me too much of Boyzone and Roman is nice but I still prefer Rowan and Reuben. Still struggling to choose but this has been a big help thanks! I like the idea of seeing what he looks like in the hospital and choosing then with help from my nurses and family.
