Thom vs. Tom
Hi, I’m expecting a son in late February, and I’ve chosen Thomas for his name. I plan on calling him Thomas and not using a nickname, but I know that either my son or his friends will probably shorten it to Tom at some point. If this happens, I much prefer the spelling ’Thom’ to ’Tom’. I just like the way it looks better. How can I make sure that this spelling is used? Will I have to tell people "That’s ’Tom’ with an H" every time I give his name? Thanks for any help- Brie

I think it’s OK! There’s always the singer Thom York to vouch for that, haha. My daughter’s name is Lilly, with two L’s. Go for it! :)

At the end of the day it is your choice...he is your baby! I am more drawn to Tom though. Congratulations.

I’m with you for preferring Thom! In fact, when our Thomas was a baby and we decided to use a nickname, I spelled it Thomy, an Irish spelling I’d seen. Unfortunately that caused confusion (people using the th-sound, even when they didn’t for the formal version) and my husband didn’t like it. Little did we know that this spelling would be an issue for us as he prefers Tom. To me, if you spell the formal name with the h, you use the h in the shortened version; without the h, the formal version is Tomas. But I keep getting out voted. :-(
My husband forgets, but I conceded to the spelling Tommy with the stipulation our son could choose Thom/Tom when the time came. At seven (and starting at four) he prefers Thomas.

Crazy to me how entitled people feel to the spelling of someone else's name. Everyone insisted on calling me Tommy growing up even though I hated it. Then I went to college and introduced myself as Thomas, which I liked most, but then everybody would constantly ask "but what do you want to be called?" Uh, probably the way I introduced myself? Eventually people just started calling me Tom and I got tired of it so now I'm Tom.
Here's the answer: it's your kid's name, not yours. Let him choose which spelling and which variation. If he wants Thomas, Thom, Tom or Tommy, or something completely different, hey that's his decision, not yours.
