Alessia vs. Alicia vs. Evelyn
I met a little girl named Alessia the other day and she was the cutest little girl ever. She had great big brown eyes and a cheeky smile. I fell in love with her name and literally felt my baby kick when she told me her name. I had a "that’s it!" moment when I realised that is what I want to name my daughter. However, one problem. My husband says it sounds made up, and sounds like Alicia which is a proper name. He says he likes Alicia but Alessia is weird. Do I get him to come round to Alessia or go with Alicia? We were also considering Evelyn before my encounter with the little girl, but now I’m not sure on it. What shall we do? Our daughter is Sophia Lily and our son is Daniel Jacob.
The Top Baby Name is...

Alicia
Evelyn

So this girl you met the other day is cuter than your on daughter? I would never say something like that! Your children are ment to be the most beautiful things on this earth!

I appreciate what you are saying, but it was just an exaggeration. She was just beautiful. My children are incredible and of course I wouldn’t change them for the world, but I can still appreciate other children are cute. Admittedly I shouldn’t have said "the cutest little girl ever" because my Sophia is incredibly cute, but I was just trying to convey how I fell in love with the name Alessia. I am sorry if I offended you. However, this still hasn’t answered my question!

How would you pronounce Alessia?
I do really like Alicia and Evelyn. I think ,to go with your other children, out of Alicia and Evelyn i would pick Evelyn. But i might change my mind depending on how you say Alessia!
:)
Congratulations.

I can understand where the poster is coming from, my children are beautiful but there is this little boy at my son’s nursery who is Italian who has massive brown eyes and he is just sooo cute! And sometimes you say "the cutest ever" but I am always going to prefer my own children, even when they are being little monsters!!
Poster, I think Alessia is lovely, too. Alicia just doesn’t have the same feel even though one syllable is slightly different. But if your husband doesn’t like it, then I’m afraid it’s all about compromise! I was obsessed with the name Elliot for years, but when it came to having my son, we just didn’t agree and ended up calling him Luke- something I had never considered but it really suits him, and now I can’t imagine him being called Elliot at all!
Good luck

Thank you. Alessia is pronounced ah-LESS-ee-uh, just like Alicia is pronounced ah-LISS-ee-uh. I do know it’s all about compromise, and naming children is very hard! I’m sure we’ll come up with a name we love as much as Sophia and Daniel eventually! Maybe some suggestions would help us?

To poster 4:
Yes but it’s our personal belief that your children should be the most precious things on earth to you. It’s alright to say that kids cute but never to say it is more beautiful than your own children. You don’t want your kid to develop eating disorders and start trying to change themselves because there mum things there friend is more beautiful. Although you might think they will never read this or over hear you saying it but what if they do? It is like saying: ’ your cute but your mate at nursery is so much cuter, sorry.’

I do really like all these names but Evelyn has a classical edge and it will never age.

Alessia to me sounds very Italian, and it is actually Italian for "Alexis", meaning "defending warrior". Alicia is Spanish for "Alice", meaning "noble" and Evelyn is English, meaning "desired".
Sophia is Greek, meaning "wisdom", but it sounds very Italian to me, too. I don’t think Evelyn goes very well with Sophia as it isn’t very feminine-sounding like Alessia and Alicia. Other suggestions:
Emilia- Latin meaning "rival"
Francesca- Italian meaning "free"
Felicia- Latin meaning "lucky"
Olivia- Latin meaning "olive tree"
Marina- Latin meaning "from the sea"
Isabella- Spanish and Italian meaning "pledged to God"
Elisa- Spanish and Italian meaning "pledged to God"
Irina- Russian from Greek, meaning "peace"

Thank you again for your comments. Really regret what I said; I can see it has caused quite a debate. I can only apologise and say that this little girl is NOT cuter than my own daughter, it is just an expression that was said without thinking. I did not say it with the thought of "my daughter is not as cute".
Thank you for your detailed comment, Poster 8, and for your suggestions. I really like Emilia and Elisa. Very pretty! Irina is unusual too, and I love the meaning.
I shall write these down and show my husband when he gets home. Thank you again.

Alessia is beautiful and it’s not made up. It does appear to be pronounced differently though but when I first saw the name I pronounced how you do and I believe others will to.

I like Alessia. It’s very pretty, although Alicia would go better with Sophia.
Sophia Lily is such a beautiful name. It’s just perfect, I love it!
