Annica vs. Anica vs. Annika
Hi, I am pregnant with a little girl so me and my husband are looking for names. We want the name to be special and really mean something to us. We like the name Annica a lot and it does have meaning to us. The problem is we are not sure about the spelling. It is pronounced On-ica, not An-ica. Which spelling works best? We are also worried that she will be given the nn Nicky or Nicki, which we absolutely hate! Should we still go with it? What do you think? Thanks! -Jessica

I’ve never heard Nicki or Nicky as a nickname for Annika. I mean yeah, it makes sense, and I could see you COULD do that if you want. But I would have thought the "natural" nickname, if you had one, would be Annie or something. But I don’t think Annika is the kind of name that people would automatically shorten. It’s only two syllables to begin with, so to shorten it to another two syllable nickname doesn’t really make sense unless you want to.

I think the parents create the nickname anyway. If you think about it, at first she’s not going to be with friends, she’ll be at home with you. Then when she gets older and goes to school, other kids will ask her what her name is and that’s where she’ll say "oh call me Annie (or Nikki) or Annika" :)

** goodness, my brain was apparently melting when I posted earlier about Annika only having two syllables!!! :) I still don’t think it’s a name that people automatically shorten, but my logic was obviously way off!

How do you want to pn her name? At first glance this is how I pn her name. Annica= Ann-e-cuh, Anica= On-e-ca or Annika= on-knee-ca? I think that should determine your spelling choice.

I would pronounce all three the same way = ann-ee-car
Annika is the traditional and most common spelling in Scandinavia and much of Europe. I think you can pronounce it anyway you like and nn her anything you like. We\’re going with Annika (pronounced Ah-nik-a) for our baby girl due this Feb. Congrats and good luck!
