Her name was Helen, but the thing is, is I dont really like the name but since it was my mom’s name I feel like I have to use it. Do you think that Hailey/Haley could be a nickname for Helen? thanks

I don’t really think so because Helen and Hailey are there own separate names. why don’t you just name her Hailey it starts with the H of Helen so you can still be honoring your mother.

Or could you use Helen as a middle name? I like the name Hailey better for the first name.

If you really don’t like the name, you shouldn’t use it.......you’ll only regret it later.

Heidi is better. It’s has more of a "Helen" style. A classic, not too popular.

You feel obligated? That’s not a good reason to name your daughter Helen

What about using the name Helena? You can pronounce Helena two ways...
Helena (hel-lay-na) nickname Lena (lay-na)
Helena (hel-len-na) nickname Leni (len-nEE)
Helena (hel-lay-na) nickname Lena (lay-na)
Helena (hel-len-na) nickname Leni (len-nEE)

No, the two names having nothing in common, other than the letter H. I’d either use Helen as the middle name or skip the idea altogether if you really don’t care for the name. I don’t really see how choosing another completely different name that begins with H honors Helen.

A lot of famous people were named Helen.
Helen Mirren
Helen of Troy
St. Helena
You could choose a derivative of Helen such as Helena, Helene or even Elena.
Incidentally, per Wikipedia, Helen of Troy had " ’the face that launched a thousand ships’. Thus, 1 millihelen is the amount of beauty needed to launch a single ship."
With that history plus it being your mother’s name, why not Helen? It is a beautiful and honorable name.

Hailey doesn’t really honor the name Helen. What about making your daughter’s initials the same as your mothers? So you mother’s name began with an H, give your daughter a name that begins with H and make the middle name initials match too. But I still think that if you actually want to honor you mother, then use Helen or Helena. But if you don’t use one of those two names, I wouldn’t really say your honoring your mother.

I don’t see why nicknames have to make sense. They are just this pet name you like that you call someone close to you.
My nickname has absolutly nothing to do with my name, for example. It’s not very fdar from Helen nn Hailey. Think outside the box, people!
Helena nn Hailey might work better.

Here’s the deal: it doesn’t mean you love your mother any more by using her name. And though I’m sorry you lost her when she was so young, she’s not here to know that you named your daughter after her. But if she were, she would know it was more out of obligation than love for the name. Name your daughter something that you and your husband love and make sure you tell her lots of stories about her Grandma named Helen. Don’t use a name you don’t like then force another name to be its nickname. (gotta say, though, I love Helen and hate Hailey:).
