Aibhilin said Ave-leen vs. go for it vs. too hard

My husband and I are expecting our first baby girl. My husband is originaly from Ireland and came over many years ago. When we got pregnant with Bartley he expressed his desire for our children to have Irish names and it has never been a problem until now. We have two boys named Bartley Joel and Cillian Andrew. As you can see our boys have Irish names that are pretty easy to say but now I have a problem. For all of you that might not have seen a traditional Irish name they are not always spelled like they are said and this is my problem. My husband and I are in love with the name Aibhilin said Ave-leen. We love it and not to be mushy but my heart melts when I hear my husband say it with his accent. My problem is that Aibhilin will never be said right so my question is should we pick a different name that will be easier in the US or should we stick with it. Thank you and sorry this is so long. Diarmuid and Marie

How hard would it be to correct someone if they mispronounce her name? I think you’re making a big deal out of nothing.

I love this name. Perhaps instead of the traditional Gaelic/Irish spelling, you could anglicize it a little?

i agree with pp. Just spell it differently. That way people will pronounce your daughters name properly. And since your hubby is irish and you are not, you can use an irish name with a english/american spelling.

I like it. PLEASE don’t butcher/Americanize the spelling!!!

Nicola, I would hate to see the name spelled wrong as well, but it would make her life easier living in America

It’s nice but she might get annoyed when she gets older and no one ever gets her name right. My name is Brook and no one ever spells it right, they always put an e on it. But it’s your choice, if you like it go for it!
I was looking for other irish names and found a few.

I think it sounds quite pretty, but you’re right, no one will ever pronounce it properly with that original spelling. I would either come up with a more usable spelling or find a new name.

That’s the name we chose for our daughter and we spelled it "Aveleen". It is a beautiful name, we changed the spelling so people would pronounce it correctly and even still people mispronounce it sometimes. Anyhow, it’s a very sweet girlie name and we are glad we chose it.

I know this is an old post, but, we just found it, and our daughter is 8 years old now, and we had the same thoughts when deciding to name her. We kept the Gaelic spelling (Aibhlinn). She does have to pronounce her name to adults, however, if she say's her name to other kids, they hear it and say it the way they here it. It is a beautiful unique Irish name, and as a strong personality, she embraces and loves it!
