Memphis vs. Boy vs. Girl

I love the name Memphis. Though it is the name of a place (Memphis, Tenn. and Memphis in Egypt), it is a legitimate name that means "Established and Beautiful". And, being obsessed with Egypt, I love that connection. But, my question is....do you think it is a boy or girl name? I have seen several name sites claiming that it is unisex. What gender do you think?

I see it as more of a boy name personally. I like Alexandria for a girl & Cairo for a boy. GL.

Boy. If you’re after a similar Egyptian style name for a girl I’d go with Isis :)

I see it as either. You could always pair it with a really sweet feminine mn for a girl, e.g. Memphis Ruby

We are thinking of naming our baby Memphis! The doctor thinks our baby is a boy, so we would be using it as a boys name, but you could name a girl Memphis too. And to the person who named their girl Memphis Raines...seems like we may have gotten the same idea from the same movie! :)

I named my daughter Memphis Gwynn. If we had had a boy his name would have been Memphis too. My husband’s older son grew up in Tennessee and when he moved to Illinois the other kids would call him Memphis because of his accent, he didn’t like it, but I thought it was a pretty cool nickname. So when we got pregnant in 2011 we choose Memphis for the baby’s name. Her middle name comes from her Grandmother. I couldn’t imagine her as anyone other than Memphis...sees spunky, strong willed, opinionated and the most care little girl I’ve ever meet! I could be bias though..lol! :)
