Garrison vs. NOT GARRY

I like the name Garrison but hate the nickname Garry. If I name my child Garrison, will people automatically call him Garry for short even if he’s raised knowing and telling people his name is Garrison? What do you think? - Calista, Leo, and Zinnia

I went to college with a guy named Garrison and no one called him Garry. If you always call him Garrison or by a different nickname like Gare, then you should be ok.

Um Garrison is a bad name personnaly. It is more of a last name, not a first

I like the name Garrison as well, but you’re never going to be able to control that automatic nickname of Garry. You might be successful around friends and family, but when he goes to school say good-bye to your control.

The question wasn’t if you liked Garrison, it was whether or not people would call him Garry.

I think if he told people his name is Garrison, they’ll call him Garrison. Simple :)

What if your son WANTS to be called Garry?
Think about his opinion.

I agree with Cait, you might be able to get away with it around friends and family, but when he goes to school it’s a toss up. He might actually grow to LIKE Garry or Gare b/c it’s shorter and cooler. But like Cait said the moment he goes to school, say goodbye to your control.

Valid. Gare is okay but Garry...blech. Should I use the name if I dislike Garry so much?

I think that you can still use the name if you want to take the gamble. We named our son Henry and I HATE (with a passion) the nn Hank. We used the name anyway. I’ve just told everyone that he’s Henry or Harry, but NEVER Hank. So the nn he goes by is Harry. If Garrison has a nn like Gare and no one calls him Garry (and I mean NO ONE), I don’t think that there should be too much of a problem. If he decides on Garry when he’s older, there’s not much you can do about it except only call him the name you love, Garrison. GL!

If you absolutely HATE the nn Garry, don’t use the name. Just use it for a middle name or something. I have a friend that named her daughter Magda and she hates the nn Maggie, it really makes her angry.

Honestly speaking, Garrison has a nice ring too it, however, I would NEVER, and I mean NEVER name my child that. It’s like when you see a pretty dress at the store, and you like it but you couldn’t see yourself wearing it. You shouldn’t only be weary of the nn Garry, but also how the name will effect your child. My Mother chose to name me Ariel, and everytime I meet someone they say "oh, ariel, like the little mermaid" and that has of course gotten old after a while. You wouldn’t want someone meeting your son and saying: "Garrison? Like Mr.Garrison from South Park?" now would you? Thats not a very nice show at all for a child to be compaired too. I can understand your affection for the name, but please try and think of how the name will effect your baby. :] Good Luck!

I agree with the above post. I like the name Garrison but too many people would associate it w/ Mr Garrison

If anything, people may call him Gar. If he introduces himself as Garrison, thats what others will call him. A nickname like Garry would only catch on if that’s how he introduced himself or preferred to be called.

I LOVE Garrison as well! and also do NOT like Garry. That said I am naming my LO Garrison! he will be here in 5 weeks. I’ve never even heard of Mr. Garrison, because I never watched that stupid classless show mentioned above.

My sixteen year old’s name is, Garrison. We’ve never had the problem of him being called Garry...he’s always been automatically called Garrison. Hopefully everyone has such luck as we"ve had with this first name, Garrison.
