How do you pronounce your other daughter’s name?
posted by adda :: 17 years ago | report
ummm.... sorry, but no. Not a nice name. If you want a bird name try Robyn/Robin.

Maeby is pronounced...may-be. Like maybe yes maybe no.

We got it from our favorite show Arrested Development.

And we greatly dislike the name Robin. Only makes me think of batman.

What’s wrong with birds?

Sparrows, by nature, scavenge for food around cities and, like gulls or pigeons, will happily eat virtually anything in small quantities. They’re dirty and carry disease. That’s not something I’d name my daughter after. Sorry.

Sparrow is a great name! Very unique and really all that matters is that you love it. You can’t always please everyone, so no matter what there will be someone who doesn’t like the name. But if it suits your daughter then it’s perfect.

Zippora
Meaning:
A little bird, a sparrow. A biblical name.

what happens if the daughter hates it???
posted by guest :: 17 years ago | report
Isn’t that a risk you take with any name?
posted by guest :: 17 years ago | report
Sparrow’s aren’t very pretty or nice birds. They’re also known for being kind of scrawny birds which could result in some teasing for her - especially if she’s either very slender or chubby.

I’ve never actually seen Pirates of the Caribbean, but isn’t Jack Sparrow the name of a pirate?

Would you want to be named Sparrow? Sometimes I think this is the best question to ask yourself. Is it the kind of name you can see being suited for an adult woman in a variety of careers? Dr. Sparrow? CEO Sparrow?

If you are determined to use the name, maybe use it as her middle name. It will be a difficult name for a child to carry.

Wow.I’m surprised at all the negative feedback. I think Sparrow Delaney is quite pretty, actually. I’m not much of a bird expert, but I just think of a cute little bird God promises to take care of in the Gospel of Matthew.

icky, filthy, disease caring animal! Gives me the willies thinking about a flock of ’em.

I like it in reverse Delaney Sparrow. or maybe you could name her penny

Wow, people have really surprised me on this poll...I like the name Sparrow and I don’t think she would get teased much. Kids will find something to say anyway.
I also like the suggestions: Wren, Lark, Starling, Zippora.
Also, I would personally like to be named Sparrow. My name is ok but was very popular when I was named and is still in the top 10--I wish my name had more personality and spice, so I think you’re on the right track.

I think it’s horrendous. Use Wren, Sephora, or Jemima.

I think it’s adorable and will probably get some Jack Sparrow conections. I say go with it, but have you thought about switching it so it’s Delaney Sparrow?

My daughter’s first name is Delaney. It was a name that "stuck" w/both of us from the beginning. When other people hear it, they cmt. pos. abt it. If you are "questioning" Sparrow, I’d skip it and search for something you both feel ++ abt and don’t question.

I LOVE the name Sparrow, and I quite like the name Delaney but I don’t like them together. I think Sparrow is such a cool and ultra unique name and is pretty much with the trend these days. I say if you love it use it, because no matter what you name your kid someone wont like it...

I think Emilys are disease carrying and ugly, but that’s the number one name in America. Go figure.

I am 14 weeks pregnant and we are considering Sparrow as a middle name-it is a family name, and it also reminds me of the hymn, His Eye is on the Sparrow-I think it’s lovely and unique

Sparrows are never alone unless they a mourning or have lost their way

This is a bible verse that has always been one of my favorites growing up. Sparrows are also great survivors. I would say if you like this name go for it! Its cute and creative!!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the name Sparrow and am also considering it for a girl name. I grew up on a farm in Oregon and we had sparrows every year. They have centimental value to me and bring back fond memories. Go with your heart and if you love something you can’t go wrong!

Hi All, My name is Sparrow. I was born in 1970. Sure I got teased as a kid but all kids get teased and as an adult my name is a good conversation starter. Sparrows (the birds) may be dirty and carry disease but this was NEVER brought up as a way to tease. Most people think of biblical references or just the bird itself without going into detail about their habits etc. I think its funny that is even mentioned. Nicole RIchie just named her son Sparrow. Interesting...being a female it seems strange to me to name a boy Sparrow but whatever works for them.

I love it! It makes me think of a beautiful bird, free and graceful... who wouldn’t want their daughter or their own name to be associated with something so elegant? I think its a beautiful name, and anyone that would say they think its ugly or that they despise a name has bigger issues at hand... why would you hate something and be so rude to someone who is going to name their child that? Its not your name or your child, so chill out .

I think Sparrow is beautiful, but you know what, it doesn’t matter what I think. Honey, its YOUR baby and if you can see yourself yelling it down the hallway in fifteen years thats what matters. Remember all these people that want to have a say in what you name your baby aren’t going to be there in the middle of the night helping you raise it. Go with your heart. Good Luck.

I love the name Sparrow for a girl, it always comes to mind whenever I consider what I might name my daughter someday.

I LOVE it, sparrows are beautiful birds, they are hardworking and naturally pretty.

I wouldn’t take anyones advice but what you and your husband like. It is the child that makes the name :)

Sparrow is a great name! My son has been in preschool the last 2 years and there are all sorts of unusual names. I don’t think your daughter would be teased by other kids at all. I think you’ll get a lot of eye-rolling from some older folks at first (like the ones on this thread) but times are changing and I think it’s a totally acceptable name. I stumbled on this thread because I’m considering at as a middle name. Good Luck! :)

Hi! We are looking to name our daughter Sparrow too. I know this thread is from long ago, so I’m curious what you actually ended up naming her?

I LOVE this name! We are considering naming our daughter this. I think any unique name is going to be met with a lot of criticism at first. I did some research on it and came across a girl whose name was Sparrow and she said she had never encountered any teasing, only compliments on her name.

My 19 year old daughter's name is Sparrow. She loves it! Everywhere we go, both men and women (of all ages) express how much they love it too. She gets lots of compliments on how pretty it is and how well it fits her. We live in a community of very "Earthy" folks, but even those from the corporate world and more formal backgrounds initiate conversations about their liking of her name.
In the end, it's up to you to decide. If they want to change their name later, it isn't a an expensive nor complicated procedure.
Happy choosing!
